Aww, that’s too bad. I was afraid of that. Well, thanks so much for your help, Dave. If anyone has any idea bout the aspect ratio problem, that would be great too… Otherwise, I’ll just keep experimenting and hopefully I’ll figure it out eventually… Haha.

Well, I tried exporting to quicktime after changing the sequence “lower field first” setting to “none”, but it didn’t change anything. There is still the interlacing and, the aspect ratio still seems wrong.
I understand the interlacing to a degree, but the aspect ratio stumps me. If it looks fine in the browser and canvas, and I’m exporting it with the same settings as the sequence (which I believe are the same settings as the original clips), then why would it change it on export?
I just now realized that the text clips ARE added in later. I forgot that, though we filmed them and added them to the finished 16mm film, this footage was digitized before they came back from the lab, so I had to create them in Final Cut Pro, and they are square pixels, if that makes a difference.
Here’s a still. On the right is the canvas view, on the left is the exported quick time file (both at 100%). You can see how the quicktime file is stretched. Also, there is the sequence settings for reference.

Well, they used this device, that was basically like a projector, except it had a plastic enclosure around the reels… That was connected to a monitor which was connected to a miniDV deck.
I assume it was captured at 29.97, because my professor didn’t mention otherwise… So I captured it into final cut at 29.97.
Actually, yes, the original clip from the browser also has some interlacing… At first it seemed like it didn’t, but when I viewed it at 100% I could see that it did. There is no film jumping or frame drifting.. I was there during the transfer, and everything seemed like it went smoothly.
Yes, I do see the problem with trying to pull down from 29.97… I was hoping there was some way around this consider the original footage was 24fps…
Well, I just tried something.. Went into the Sequence settings and changed the “Lower fields first” setting to “none”… Just as an experiment… Here is the before and after:

That seemed to get rid of the interlacing, but I haven’t tried rendering this yet… and I’m not sure if that will effect the footage in other ways?
Anyway, here is the video I’ve rendered so far… (before making the above change). You can see how it is interlaced and squished too… You can especially tell with the text, which was filmed with the camera, not added later in post.
