    Cowians,

I’ve decided to go with the Panasonic 5 slot card reader (I got a great deal on one)I made the commitment long ago to the P2 work flow so I feel that I should do it right and keep it all Panasonic. No sense in being cheap when my reputation and client footage are on the line. Thanks for all of your support and advice. I love all of your creative solutions. The innovation you can find on the cow always amazes me!

    Best,
    Joel

I’m actually contractually bound to run fcp 7. We shoot 4-7 fashion shows a day and there are multiple shooter/editors working on the project. Project files are passed back and forth every day and if everyone is not on the version our clients and other editors are on, the collaborative process would not work. As fo the OS upgrade, I realize that I can live without it. The problem is that it has already been done to out traveling edit systems, thus the need to find another solution. On hindsight, I would not have done it. Reverting is probably the best solution. It’s not feasible to take two computers with each shooter editor since we are already maxed out on gear that we can carry with us to all of the cities we shoot in. Thanks fir your input though. It’s always greatly appreciated.

Now that is a brilliant idea. No time to test it out before this shoot but it is absolutely a great solution if it works. Nice thinking Jon.

I would revert if I did not want to ever again update 3 fairly new computers. I have three of these edit/field laptops that are less than 1.5 years old. It’s not feasible to never again update the OS on these systems.

Even though it will work, I’m still gonna buy the p2 reader by panasonic. Found one for $1200 on ebay. I can count on that always working with my P2 media. Eventually I will have to buy at least one more but it is a permanent solution that will not become obsolete or prevent me from upgrading my systems.

I’m still mad at Duel. It’s almost a class action lawsuit waiting to happen (lol)

    Peace,
    Joel

Ok, one more question. Instead of buying a $2k p2 reader, what about buying a cheap PC laptop with a pcmcia slot. How would I then transfer the footage to a mac compatible drive to edit? The PC would need the drive formatted as fat 32 with a 2GB file size limit and that would mess up my clips that are longer (ie bigger) than 2GB.

Yeah, that’s a great $2k solution. If I have to I will. Do they make a smaller 1 or 2 card version? I can’t find it if they do. I will traveling around the world on this shoot and carrying another big piece of equipment is no fun.

Have you experimented with the Nexto di drives?

I acctually spoke with a copyright attorney yesterday about the issue. She said that unless I have a written contract stating that the project files (ie my intellectual property) was to be part of the deal then I have very good ground to stand on in either denying the files to the client or selling them to them as a buy out. She also mentioned leasing the files. This means they are allowed to use the project files for X seasons of the show for a certain fee. This would work a lot like licensing music.

Anyway, just thought I’d relay what the expert had to say about it.

I think an artist has every right to re-create his/her own look as many times as clients request. Unless the project files and look are totally bought out then there is no issue. However, if the rights are completely bought out for a certain look and all of the accompanying files as well, then copyright law applies. The look must be changed X% (I’m not sure of the actual wording and percentage) to not infringe on the rights of the owner, in this case being the company that bought the work from the artist.

However, this is veering off topic. No one has paid me for my project files yet!

I agree. It’s like I painted a picture for them and they feel entitled to my brushes, pallet, and paints because they paid for the painting.
