  • ha you’re right, simpler than i thought, thanks!

(now I just need to figure out how to animate both those layers sliding into vision without taking the background video layer with it…)

  • default mapping (prev frame/next frame). I did notice the same functions were also mapped to the shift+arrow keys so I removed the shift mapping in case it was related (i’ve left them blank) but no change…

I forgot to mention I did also check all the finder key bindings (spaces, exposé etc) but there’s nothing mapped to shift+arrow keys in the obvious places

Aha! So glad I found this thread – this might just have explained all of my past and present avid render puzzles in one short post

(a few years late to the party…)

  • Me again. Although I’d still love to know why this is happening, here’s my workaround for anyone interested.

So i’ll copy the clips i want to filter into a separate blank timeline, apply filters there and tweak them till i’m happy, then copy them back into the main timeline and tweak some more against the full mix. Not massively different to how i’d usually work (solo and tweak, then unsolo and tweak), but an awkward work-flow to have to remember (and a proper mess down the line if I forget to take these steps).

  • I may have made a little headway on this – Where i’m currently working it seems ingest are assigning reel numbers by project, not by card. I think this could be the link that’s causing FCP to assume the clip is related. Having said this, adding and selecting aux reel numbers is not solving the problem for me…

I have also tried making all my clips independent and locking audio tracks (filters are still somehow automatically added and removed)

June 14, 2011 at 8:47 am in reply to: Markers – How to edit/move/delete them?

just by the way, i was just looking to find a way to move markers more easily when i came across this thread, i have now found that if you hold cmd and click on a timeline marker you can drag it to a new position.

i would also love options for markers to be more interactive (ie when i select all forward clips and move them that would include markers), but for the moment you can work around this by using more avid style editing techniques – ie. when you need to move everything after a certain point forward use insert slug. This will move markers (if your preferences are set that way) with the rest of the timeline, but you will often have to split clips to do this – this just means you’ll have to drag a few spliced clip segments back to where you want them afterwards….

not perfect but not quite as time consuming as it sounds

June 13, 2011 at 9:15 am in reply to: Markers or Sub Clips?

i’m always going back and forth with the way i work around these things – at the moment i am making timelines of the interviews and editing and lifting the segments i want onto another video layer – using markers also to name the clips – this way also makes it easier to sync additional cameras before giving them an aux TC that matches cam A

also helps to set that timeline to the same TC to make searching easier…

April 15, 2010 at 9:33 am in reply to: Wang Chung Effect help

    it depends on how many takes you have to cut between – with 3 or more you could automate the process in after effects with the strobe light filter;

sync up all your takes in a composition and apply the strobe light filter to all but the bottom layer – set the strobe to “makes layer transparent” and adjust the duration, period, and (i would) random strobe probability to be slightly different on each instance of the effect – you’ll have to experiment a bit to get a good consistency for the effect but it will work

this way you could set up a few different comps with different settings and then pick and choose the best parts to cut together…

April 13, 2010 at 1:05 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro causing digital artifacts on output

what do the artefacts look like? i worked on a mac pro that had a faulty (seriously overheating) radeon graphics card – can’t remember the model sorry – anyway, i got horizontal digital distortion across renders seemingly at random –

i managed to get around this temporarily by installing some fan control software and turning up the fans to cool down the card…
