    I see. Damn.

Thank you for the info. Such a fast response and definitely what I needed to know Shane.

Then we can’t really take on the assistant editing job, since the director basically wants me to organize the footage by scene (so he can start editing in Avid.)

Basically the point of hiring me / this company is to have the information that helps him edit an assembly.

The primary thing he wants is the project in Avid organized by Scene, shot, description, etc.

I’ve handed off projects for Directors and editors with all the notes, amount of takes, any oddities that help them edit…. noted in the project file. But those project files were all in Premiere.

So the only way to deliver them a project with description, notes, etc is to learn enough Avid in time to take the job. I think I should just be honest and say I can’t do the organizing and descriptions in Premiere and carry over to Avid. Unless they’re willing to give me time to learn enough Avid to -efficiently- create those notes, folders, descriptions in the Avid project file.

So they’re set on their ways. Avid it is ☹

Thanks for all the help everyone. Helped with being prepared to talk to them and get the work.

    But my question now is:

    – Can I somehow take my Premiere project … with all the folders, buns, scene Take, Description, Notes, etc… and bring that information back to Avid?

So far, the only way I know how to go from Premiere to Avid is an EDL. Would the EDL keep the Scene | Take | Description | Notes | Etc?

Or would I have to redo all of that in Avid? The director and final editor will be using Avid and wants to see the description, Scene number, and all that info.

Interesting. I tried the half and half method, but it still gave me a sequence that where the video didn’t sync with the original (time code massively off)

I had to match the first and last frames in the new sequence, to each video block in the FCP sequence.

    UPDATE:

I tried a Video-only XML sequence and it worked!

However, none of the sound translated over. I tried a sound-only sequence and none of the sound clips showed up.

Thanks Andy. I tried it though Davinci and it still didn’t work round trip. I’ve also looked at the error report and for most of the clips it simply says “not translated.”

  • I’ve tried this. But they both have the same timecode and reel data. So if I link one clip to a R3d, Premiere does an auto search to locate files with the same name/timecode/reel data. And it ends up linking to the proxies.

  • Thanks Robert but for some reason that’s not working for me. Even when the clips show up, the timing (inside the clip) is way off for certain clips. Not sure why. Think it has to be redone by hand

  • Another thing I noticed is that certain scenes (usually the ones containing the grey stripes) that a lot of the clips that are showing up, are not correct. Its as if the timecode didn’t carry over from FCP to premiere.

Does anyone know the remedy for this?

  • Right now:

I’m mimicking the edit. Im looking at the FCP project and finding the start frame and the end frame then going into Premiere and setting the in and out points to match the first and last frame in FCP.

What is strange is that when I put the clip in, it does not match the same length as the original edit. Naturally, I inspected to see if there was any Time Remapping or Slow Motion in the timeline. There was none. The frame rates match.

Why is it that I get the same exact start and end frame, yet the length is different? This is all trying to patch blank areas of the XML once it is opened in Premiere.

  • Thank you guys!

I used the track mixer and it works perfectly. Just what I needed
