    Thanks for the advice.

Connections aren’t an issue for me. I only have 1 Thunderbolt external RAID.

My biggest concern is that the iMac gets very hot and loud. I’m looking for a system that’s going to keep me going for a few years, and the fact that the Mac Pro can keep itself cool and quiet during long renders is appealing.

So future proofing is a consideration. And I do wonder if Avid will support dual GPUs in one of the next updates.

Shane, yes you can upgrade the CPU on the Mac Pros. Plenty of tutorials online, countless people have done it.

Michael, I get around 80MB/s read and write on my media drive. And on my system drive I get 150MB/s write, 250MB/s read (SSD).

    Cheers 🙂

Sometimes I transcode, other times I use AMA, it depends on the media I have. But with either method, rendering is very slow and Avid struggles to play back even basic effects in real time.

My drives are only about half full, and yes I have a USB 3.0 card.

Basically I’m wanting to figure out if it’s going to be more beneficial upgrading the CPU or getting a better video card.

Does Avid take advantage of the GPU?

    Thanks for the info guys.

I have 16GB of RAM. And my media drive is an external RAID 0 connected via USB 3.0.

    Problem solved, I think!

I was given this advice on the Avid forums:

I understand your question because I had also that field problem. Please follow the workflow below:
    1) You import your images: upper field first :ok
    2) You export: pls set lower field first
    3) Using Procoder 3 to transcode your movie to mpeg 2: with incoming field: lower field first
and out coming: upper field first.
That have the result your mpeg 2 with upper field first.
Final, Pls check your movie on monitor to see happening flicker or not. If OK, you can brocasting!

And it seems to have done the trick. Only issue is the output file is 8mbit and the broadcaster wants 15mbit minimum, but I’m guessing it’s due to the fact that it consists entirely of still images

    Thanks for the reply, John.

I tried taking the images offline and reimporting with “ordered for current format” and it didn’t seem to make a difference.

Also, I’ve tried editing the Squeeze presets and making sure it’s not deinterlacing, and that didn’t change anything either.
