I like David’s three year plan, at most. It is what I would have spent anyway. I think the other 6 million they seem to be willing to slough off would as well. The current model doesn’t work for anyone with half a brain. I would rather just stay with CS6 and be done with it. Prepare my files from different codecs and export them as a universal one such as ProRes of DNxHD and finish in something else. I’ve already done one long form project that way, and I got the best of both worlds. Adobe isn’t indispensable when looked at that way. I won’t sign for more than three years, and not without a working copy at that time. Features not backward compatible are of no use. CS6 in three years? No, thanks, I already have it and it won’t support three years of my work.
Better off sending them no money and forcing a real change in this model. In other words, dump Narayen. He’s tied to this like a burglar caught in your house. Adobe can innovate without this model. All I really need is better media management for docs, anyway. I do about zero mograph, and Motion suits me better for the little I need anyway. AE code is so ancient, why should I pay for a re-write of that when I hardly ever use it? Especially if the whole deal causes me to lose access to my work. I’m not brain dead. The suite was really the best model. Why do you think all the yelling and screaming is happening? People liked it and want it back. Failing that, 3 years and a current out for Adobe to save face. But that doesn’t even solve the problem of future OS updates, especially on the Mac, where they happen every year now.

I’ve seen the Philip Hodgetts article. Good news. My question is whether or not they will certify other cards for the Mac, especially the 2009-2012 Mac Pro. So far only Radeon M series have been certified. And Mac Pro 2013 has been promised. Thanks in advance, David or Kevin.

You only list two Radeon M (mobile) series cards on the OpenCL list for Mac. Do you plan to add more? I know you have said you will support the new AMD 6GB cards in the new Mac Pro, good there. It is an extremely impressive machine. And going backwards, what about the 5870’s in all those older Mac Pros? I saw that CC will allow you to test your cards without modifying code in the Terminal, but it would be nice to know beforehand. Thanks.

$6k will be toward the high end version. Being honest, I’ve always been in the midrange with price/performance, hence my Hexacore 3.33 2010. Don’t do a lot of mograph. If I did, yes I would buy it at $6k. No hesitation. A lot of Cheese Graters were sold at higher prices, and this thing will scream with no hassles, unlike Hackintosh or even Windows.

I think they will adapt to it because many of their clients will be using it. In every suite? Probably not. You note I said that LA isn’t everything. By that I meant the very largest facilities. But for where these things will sell in quantity, they will do very well, smaller facilities, but primarily one or two man operations. Also photographers, artists, semi-pros, anyone who would have bought the current Mac Pro or a maximum iMac but actually wanted more and is committed to the Apple ecosystem. And for some who aren’t. This is one powerful unit. It could turn some Windows users heads. Windows 8 isn’t exactly flying out the door.
It wouldn’t be the first time Apple changed everything.

I don’t think anyone believes it will be $1500 loaded, so you can put the dinnerware away. I imagine it will fall in the same ballpark as the current Mac Pro. If so, I’m getting one. They will sell. Big LA facilities aren’t everything.
Somehow I remember FCP Legacy was largely about bringing real editing power to a larger market. I should know. I was the Hawaii Avid dealer. I know what it did to my sales. And expensive proprietary hardware. Went back to production soon. On what? FCP. Also some Media 100. I think the larger facilities will adapt to it as well, the same as they did with FCP legacy and the Power Macs/Mac Pros. But will it change things for the individual operator or small facility? Absolutely.

Walter Soyka, who follows these things more closely than I do, suggested it would be a single E5-2600 v2 Xeon which has up to 12 actual cores in one processor.

It is small, but other than that, I would say it is nothing like a mini. I don’t want a mini. This, I want.
And the Adobe guys are already talking about how great their Open CL development is and Dual GPUs on our favorite, Creative Cloud. Don’t see why it wouldn’t run Avid MC very well, also. It does clearly make one take interest in FCX. Which I am now doing.
