    Hey Ty
Yeah I’m at homewood – I’m the video specialist at the Digital Media Center. Its great to know your near by. Do you work for Hopkins? Let me explane what were looking for and why in a little more detail.

So we train students ( many of which have very limited video or editing knowledge ) how to use cameras and editing software. We also provide video equipment for the film and media students who are often shooting narrative pieces on video.

I think training the students in a workflow integrating timecode may be too complex for them to grasp. also because we are increasingly turning to digital SLRS to serve as our production cameras ( we do also own 2 panasonic HPX and a XA10 ) this solution is not ideal.

Would your advice then be to train students to limit takes to about 10 mins?
If so then do you think the zoom r24 would work? Should we look at a different mixer/digital recorder combo?

My final question is – money aside – would running a designated mixer into say an Zoom H4n produce better sound then wrapping them into the same package? if so what are the best choices for this ?

    thanks much
    best

    ok dave
one final question. for play back how would you suggest de-interlacing the footage ? when exporting in compressor or using a filter in FCP?
    thanks

    thanks dave
If we wanted to get them even smaller could we use prores(proxy) ? is the only disadvantage to using proxy that it is lower quality? will proxy play back as dependably as the other prores codex’s ?
    thanks

I was just watching shane’s video – thanks for recommending it – BUT in it he say that you can log and transfer AVCHD isn’t that the same as MPEG AVC/H.264 which the canon records in ?

yeah I’ve looked into mocha but from the tutorials I’ve done it doesn’t seem like it would save me more time that just combining drawn masks and rotobrush. Maybe there are key features to Mocha that I’m not aware of. What I really wish is that I could covert rotobrush into mask key frames at any stage during the process. I’m talking about drawing complex maks of say someone waving their arms around and getting every finger.

  • it looks different both on a dv monitor and in the computer, VERY different. Several stops under exposed between quicktime and FCP. I really don’t believe this is a monitor issue. I have shot a lot with this camera and never had a problem with a discrepancy in picture between camera / quicktime / FCP. I did just recently upgrade the mac OS to the most current version snow leopard ( was running it already but the had an update). SO could it be something that this new OS up grade changed in the way FCP and Quicktime understand and display the video information?
    thanks

  • Yes I’ve tried it on a pro monitor and it looks different between camera and FCP.

  • I’ve viewed the DV footage with a broadcast monitor. It looks different coming out of final cut pro and the camera. I don’t this this is a monitor issue. Also even when viewing it with just a computer monitor I have never experienced such discrepancy between FCP and the footage that I am importing.
