May 25, 2010 at 1:30 pm in reply to: XDCAM EX nightmare in PremCS4!?

    Hi Jeff/All,

THanks, Just checked one of the Production Premium CS4 boxes and it does support 10.4.11 – which is the version I am running off.

Just to complicate things even more..one of the other Macs running same OS, Quicktime version, XDCAM Transfer, CS4, etc, etc *IS* working with the EX files! Only difference I can see between that one and mine is the other one has FCP 6.0.5 installed and mine has 5.14.

    Any more ideas guys?

    Hi John,

I was hoping you might reply…my BPAV is still intact and all I did to get the footage off the SxS cards was copy the whole BPAV folder (using XDCAM EX Clip Browser) onto our network RAID, then using Media Browser I imported each clip.

I think I understand the FCP codecs thing now – and as I haven’t converted any of the clips you’re right I shouldn’t need FCP. Although that still doesn’t explain why it works on one mac and not another, when the only difference is the operating system!?

    Hi Eric,

Thanks for your post. No I can’t get any EX footage into PPro using my mac. Having to use a colleagues Leopard Mac which is a pain, but only option in the short term.

I’d love to know how to sort this on my Tiger Mac though…seems a bit ridiculous that I have to rely on an Apple Pro App being upto date just so that I can work properly in an Adobe one! We moved over to 100% Adobe workflow when CS4 came out, but I’ve got to admit – on the edit side its a bit flaky isn’t it! Used to love Premiere on Windows, but it’s gaping reliability holes are rapidly making me want to sack it off!

    HELP!

    Hi Roland,

It’s a difficult one. This project has grown over the last 5 years or so and was at one point too big to fit back onto our shared networks RAID; therefore updates were added to the server and the main body from a massive external drive.

I was just trying to streamline the project to only include files relevant to the latest incarnation, hence the collect. I did have a ‘file path too long’ message on collecting to begin with, but then spent a week renaming/relinking so that it would collect. Then I collect and it drops links again, even though they WERE collected! MADNESS!

Anyway, I wasted another day yesterday relinking to the collect file and all seems to work now – phew!

    This really should be easier.

  • OK, thanks Todd. I guess we’re going to have to buy some more workstations, AE licences and plugins sharpish then if Nucleo 2 doesn’t work! EEEk!

I for one can’t wait for CS5 – bring it!

  • Hi Walter,

Thanks for your suggestions. That could well work in some cases, but the resolution is 7000 x 800 and multiple RGB+A TGA sequences stacked up in a half hour comp would be a huge amount of data to store/move around. I’m not sure how much time it would save me either tbh. Hey ho!

I just hope the next version of AE has a more intelligent rendering engine (ROI still doesn’t seem to make any difference to preview time in most cases either)

Nucleo 2 I might d/load a demo of though and see if that will do it..shouldn’t have to pay for several licences of a 3rd party renderer something as simple as this though!

I do like to whinge on occasion.

These are 48khz WAVs and my project is set to 48KHz aswell. It’s very odd!

Another thing to throw in (and may not be relevant for Windows 7 if it’s now more secure?) but when I used to run an edit/vfx PC on Win XP at my old job it got so riddled with bugs and viruses that I had to wipe it, start again and not connect it to the internet AT ALL after that. I had AVC, McAfee, etc. to no avail!

Like I said, this may have improved with Win7, but I’ve not had one bug on my Mac in the last 2 years (touch wood!)

Something to maybe consider if you want a professional 24/7 working machine.

I think one way to look at it could be – if you’re budget is tight and you only use Adobe products then maybe a DIY PC tower is your best bet.

If you need to use FCP or Color/Motion, etc – then buy a Mac.

If you want maximum performance and have a good budget and like Windows, but ability to upgrade processors, etc later on *cheaply* then buy a PC.

If you have a healthy budget and want maximum flexibility – buy a Mac and a copy of Windows to run on it aswell.

    EASY!
