Thanks so much. This works very well.
My question is: is there a way to adjust this expression to fade in when close to the camera in addition to fading out when away from the camera? For example: the object is transparent when closer than 50 from camera. From 100 to 200 its transparency goes from 0 to 100. And then 500 to 1500 it fades out as you have it now.
I was trying to put additional startFade and endFade commands, but it didn’t work.

    Thanks so much Dan!
This expression work really well. Got sidetracked by several other projects, thus the delay in reply. Anyway, this is a really nice expression. AE should incorporate in the auto orient settings!

    Thanks Michael,
I took some expression class some time ago. I’ve forgotten most of it but I do remember it was possible to write an expression that if one object intersect with another its opacity will change. Maybe that would be a way, using a big solid for example as an “effector” effecting the opacity of photos to reveal them (by moving the solid) … The photos would have that expression.

Though, your solution seems to be much easier to execute. But how would you make sure that banding aligns with photos? My photos are sort of rotated randomly and overlapping each other a bit (so it more looks like a random pile).

Wow, lots of cool stuff! Definitely got to get my hands on Plane Space…
Still, without Plane Space, what would be the best way to make a photo grid that forms a Christmas tree – 2 dimensional one – and be able to keyframe fading in (opacity) of the rows of photos? And not to have photos repeated.

    Thanks!
