I’d forgotten about Audiovision. I had a client with one, who asked me (a freelance editor) to learn it after his audio guy moved. I browsed the manual, and said, “No thanks.”

I was just thinking yesterday about Avid’s first rack mounted RAID, and how loud it was. No way you could have one in the working room.

IINM, Fairlight is an Australian company, as is BMD. I don’t know anybody who had a CMI, their first product that was like the similar Synclavier. I knew several people who had those. And there was another product that Peter Gabriel promoted at the time, that I recall was called an AMS, or some similar three character acronym. Several started out as samplers with a built in DAW. I recall that ProTools started as a pretty simple digital audio recorder.

IINM, none of the plug-ins for Ae are qualified for any version beyond Ae CC2018. They stopped updating Warp to work with anything after CC 2014, I believe. I think they’ve given up supporting their products, although I see they are still selling them. I’ve given up myself. Getting Invigorator not to crash constantly has been a fool’s errand. Element is far more stable. 3D Flag still works for me pretty well, even in Ae 2020. I wish they would update Invigorator, because it does Ray Tracing (refractions through glassy materials), which Element doesn’t and probably never will.

I agree that they used to have incredible support. I surmise it’s a pretty small company – two or three people.

I’m not crazy about the FCPX approach to audio. I’m used to track based effects, and it makes sense. I’m hoping Adobe will roll Audition into Premiere at some point, like this, and avoid round-tripping, and re-writing / export / import of audio. Also, beef up the busing, incorporate side-chaining, and make more flexible dragging and dropping of effects in the sends, saving presets, etc. BMD is taking an approach I admire. Fairlight was already well regarded in the audio world.

About every three days on average. Some days twice. One of the recurring reasons is the app switcher GUI gets stuck to the secondary display (annoying), or the Finder disappears altogether (bad!). I can still reboot from the Apple menu. A few times, I’ve had to power off the computer to reboot. Occasionally, I can’t switch between Adobe apps, and/or they won’t hide or unhide. Rebooting brings back the expected behavior (for a while, anyway).

I have a new MacPro and Catalina is required. My issues so far is that I have to reboot as often as I did in OS9. I’ve reinstalled the OS at least four times. Worst thing that happened was my User folder vanished and I was returned to the default User state. Some of my Mail messages content disappears; quitting and relaunching brings them back.

At the beginning, I did a clean install of all my apps, extensions, plug-ins, etc. The only folder I imported using Migration Assistant were my Documents.

Only a few apps I use often aren’t ready or won’t run on Catalina. Only one audio plug-in developer hasn’t updated yet.

I got a QNAP about ten days ago, and no problems I’ve noticed so far.

BTW, you CAN boot from an external drive, contrary to what some people are claiming. It requires some settings in the Security pane to make it work. I use SuperDuper, and highly recommend a weekly clone, if not more frequently. Since my clone disk is an external SSD, using the Smart Update, cloning take about ten minutes. Time well spent.

You can do this in Pr.

Create a Sequence that’s at least twice the height of your text. Place the text so that the top is touching the horizontal center-line.
Put that Sequence (now a Nest) in your master sequence and position it where you want it.
Apply the Basic 3D effect.
Animate the Tilt from -90 to 0 degrees.
Apply a Tint effect and choose a color in both the Black and White color boxes (I prefer Tint for colorizing to the Paint Bucket.).
Option-drag this Nest to a higher track and delay its start point in time by a few frames.
Change the tint on the new layer.

You can change the speed of audio and/or video using the Clip > Speed Duration feature. You can then apply the Pitch Shifter effect to the audio to offset the change in pitch.

Premiere has mask tracking, and it’s gotten a lot faster in the CC 20 (14.x) version. Last time I witnessed Power Windows, they were restricted to quadrangles and ovals. Has that changed?

Pr’s masks can be any shape you can make with a pen tool. They interpolate over time, and can be edited after the track. The mask tracking is faster in Pr than in Ae.

Ae has a nice face tracking feature that auto-magically makes separate masks or track points for the face, eyes, and mouth.

Pr can work in HDR, which, if I’m not mistaken (I have no experience in HDR yet.), takes 12-bits or more. Ae will indeed work in 16 or 32 bits.

I just browsed this thread, and maybe this has been addressed, but you can indeed boot off an external drive on this new Mac. I’ve done it. It requires some finagling with the Security settings. I forget how, but it’s possible.

I also wanted to see if I could install Mojave, so I made an external cloned boot disk, wiped the internal drive, and gave it a go. No luck, so I restored Catalina from my external drive. I use SuperDuper to clone my boot drive weekly, and have booted off it a few times to run Disk First Aid on the internal drive.

I have also booted off my Disk Warrior USB flash drive to run Disk First Aid.

All that said, Catalina still needs work. I’ve reinstalled it four times to fix OS level craziness and heart stopping disappearances of vital functionality, like app switching, the Finder going MIA entirely, and my User settings becoming hopelessly corrupted – a case where my clone saved my ass by Migrating the User folder back onto my internal drive.
