Hi steve, thx. took a nap. Understood about codecs. I am not editing the apple content, just creating new to tack on to the end. If I use any new footage, it would be pal SD DV (5:4) like I usually do, imported from an aging XL1s. I guess I would scale down the Apple content to fit. The Motion files would be set the sam. But what happens when it’s played on a 52″ LCD…that’s what I am worried about now. I can’t imagine it would look good, but I don’t have one to play with. One wrinkle is that the display will not only be SD DVD on wide screens, but also on new 27″ imac monitors. So I guess that’s two different outputs from the same timeline (I hope) using Compressor. I don’t know why all of a sudden I am obsessed with pre-project planning, as I usually just hack it all together and worry about getting it at the end. I guess I am just getting old…

Yes, same here. When we need another editing bay, we just whap on another iMac to the lan. They have saved us so much money it’s crazy. I have noted the same HD firewire restriction as u, but it’s really not an issue as folks seem to be going tapeless here. Amazing computers!

Thx Noah! I was hoping someone would tell me that Motion is better then Toon Boom for pure digital 2d cartoons, but that’s just because I don’t like the toon boom v3.5 interface, which I have now running in Snow Leopard, and it actually works, albeit without a lot LESS of the features of V5.
Animate looks really interesting. The interface is not mickey mouse, even if that’s what I want to animate, but the demo blows running on Snow Leopard, so it’s hard to really test under current conditions.
I guess that’s what I love about all the other packages that I have with an animation timeline (motion, c4d, fcp, ae, etc.) they all work flawlessly (ha!) on my macs. When something goes wrong, there is always the COW to help with these programs.

Dave that’s too funny…ya think! I am assuming u are talking about the crop in compressor, where they just give u a place in the UI to put in numbers for top/bottom/left/right but neglect to mention what those numbers actually mean…percent? pixels? And then the display preview there makes it look like a crop by placing that red boundary on the INDISE of the frame, unlike the canvas in FCP. If this is true, that’s just conspiratorial:)

Here are those settings I promised for doing something that defies theory and logic, in order to get a really nice video rendition for youtube upload (source/sequence was normal SD Pal 16:9)…
For the life of me I could not recreate these settings in a custom compressor – exactly – and anything just close did not make for good video on the utube. Hope it helps someone down the line…
@ Raf, the tip on Jpeg was a logical one, but did not work as well as this.
One last note before I put this one to bed (the vid will be up in about 24 hours, just search on Shubu Thapa if you want to see)…
What defies logic is that this export from FCP looks bad on the desktop, but when uploaded to youtube improves. Conversely, a good looking export using Compressor in the normal way looks good before google mangles it, but not when downstreaming from youtube. That’s nuts! And using the new “Share” form the FCP timeline is some kind of bad joke.

Thanks josh, yes problem solved right on the timeline in FCP, just upsized a nested sequence holding the project clips a scrunch, problem solved thx to David above.
Still have not found crop in Qtpro newest level – but I could have sworn I used it years ago…maybe they de-featured QTPro now they have that newfangled viewer – but that makes no sense! Anyway, thx to both u and Rafael; that’s what i love about this place…gotta problem, u get a fix (or two) in a jif…

Yes Raf, this does break all the theory, and I think we are only surprised when this happens because we are old farts yes? But seriously, this is our protools engineer’s first project where I am just doing QA and mentoring. I am old enough to be his grandfather, and he came up with the fix to get near perfect video out to you tube (or at least something that looks the same as what is on the FCP timeline). I have the flickering in FCP, and that sequence is not sized strange (normal PAL 16:9). The sizing occurs on Quicktime export. I really am going to post all these settings as soon as I get this onto youtube…and Shubu out of the studio…

Hi raf, while I understand what u are saying, I don’t think that’s the cause of the flickering few pixel lines at the bottom and the 1 pixel white line on the side once it gets to utube. The odd size is what I found to produce the best results with this project on utube, and I am not the only one. Miley Cyrus official videos and others are doing it too. I am also using settings gotten from the uploader of one of those Miley videos. It’s a very strange MPEG-4 setting using Export/Quicktime Conversion with H.264 at the odd size and a 5000 data rate and multipass. I did not make this up, but it works, as far as getting the best youtube quality. I will write this all up on the blog or here to let others examine, AS SOON AS I get my sister cum popstar the heck outta my hair…
