What if I were to format it or even capture it as 4:3 letterbox – would that allow widescreen tvs to display it as 16:9 as well without the black bars on top and bottom?

    Anthony,

I was starting out new and selected the FX1 because it was only like $3,200 then and I believe the Z1U was around $5k at the time. I needed two cameras and my start up budget did not fall with in the range of the Z1U – however, if I had to do it all over again, knowing how much business I have now, I would have gotten the Z1U mainly becuase it is a “professional” camera with more features like the XLR. I don’t like buying adapters such as the beachtek and attaching them to the camera because this only makes it more difficult to operate handheld I would think. I do not own the adapter, but it is going to be my next buy for sure.

  • Thanks Doug! That sounds like plenty of run time for an on camera light.

  • So what amount of time can be translated from say 12 amp hours for a 50w light? Thanks for all the help!

  • I’ve have a wireless mic system that I put on the groom and it seems to pick up ample coverage and I have the reciever mounted on one camera where it records audio directly to the tape. In post I sometimes combine the ambient sound from the other camera with the wireless audio. I’m thinking about getting me a recorder of some kind though. I run into a lot of problems when I need the audio from the final mix of the music if there is someone singing and it would be nice to have the minister’s mic too – since 9 times out of 10 he will already have one.

I have 2 FX1’s that I shoot weddings with and I would say that in DV mode they would match to the VX2100 pretty well. Personally I would not spend an extra $1,000+ on a HDV camera to shoot in DV mode with other DV cameras. The FX1 is a really nice camera to shoot with and I would recommend it to anyone with the budget. If you weren’t going to use the FX1 for anything else then I’d go with another VX2100. The FX1 in DV mode is not to me any sharper than the VX2100. If it is shot in DV mode it is shot at 720×480 just like the other DV cameras. Just because the FX1 has those high res. CCDs doesn’t make it a high def. camera in DV format… Look at the time of battery when shooting in HDV opposed to the DV mode, something isn’t being utilized as much in DV mode when you have a lot more min. to use than the HDV mode. Just do what ever you want, I think you will do fine getting another VX2100 if you are going to use it as just a 3rd camera. I think you should go with the FX1 if you plan to get another one or 2 in the near future since HDV is awesome quality.

Bruce, you are right about those videographers in Mississippi. My area which is the central area of Mississippi isn’t that many. Maybe a few here and there. I guess I shouldn’t have said flat out there wasn’t any, but maybe not as many as other states. Mississippi isn’t exactly a big sell I guess you could say.

When you set up a booth… Do you provide it or does who ever is putting it on provide the actual booth? Also… Should one try to jazz it up and make it attractive as possible to attract people?

Thanks, very good advice. I’m glad you laid out all the points in starting a small business. I will get right to it especially before I start advertising as a business. I’m planning on having a booth at the next bridal show hosted by a local TV station. The cost is $700 to be in it. I think for $3,300 a year I could get advertising, my listing on their “bridal hotline” as well as the booth at the show. Not going to take it that far with advertising but who knows it may pay for itself in the long run. I already took out a loan to start so I guess that’s a step. Again, Thanks!

Velma, I don’t have a website just yet, I’m planning on getting one soon when I get some spare time. Many people in my area don’t use the internet to search for videographers. There is only one other videographer in this area and I’m helping him out as well as him helping me out. I actually checked on those sites that list videographers and there wasn’t any that I recalled for Mississippi… lol if you can imagin that… Thanks for the advice!
