This looks absolutely ridiculous! I can’t wait to get into poking around under the hood.
Way way cool!

Without starting any kind of argument….I have read the manual thank you and I guess I should have stated that I’m actually on a Power Mac G5, not an Intel box. I don’t know if all the bold and extra question marks were meant for me but you might try being a little more subtle……
Anyways….Compared to my personal XP system that’s quite a bit older I’m extremely disappointed at AE 7’s performance on what should be a more than capable MAc. Rendering power is just fine…but actual updates to my comp windows, scrubbing through a timeline with just text lags etc. I’m more frustrated and venting because I just finished a project where not only was it painfully slow but Zax crashed so much I had to redesign the entire project and start anew.

I whole-heartedly agree with you here. I have AE7 running on a quad-core mac and it sucks…plain and simple. I’ve got 4gb of ram and an nvidia 6800gt and it has to be the slowest interacting piece of junk. I’ve really been disappointed. Hopefully this new update will straighten some of it out.

Morning Robin
It sounds like there is a problem with the printer driver. We have the 4500 and the Liberty printer and have this problem all the time. It’ll start the print monitor randomly when the computer starts up…sometimes after 10+ reboots. Rimage won’t give me any straight answers (after holding for 2hrs) but I think their print drivers are real buggy. What I’ve done in the past is dload the driver and reinstall it. Seems to work for a couple weeks then gets corrupted again.Ok now for my little rant…I’m so glad to hear someone else is having a problem with Rimage. Our printer just went down AGAIN on our 4500 and Rimage said that after Dec they will no longer support that printer. Now explain to me how a $7-8000 duplicator will be rendered useless if the printer fails and the company will no longer service it. /rant done Sorry…I just got off of waiting for an hour and a half to get through to tech support to have them tell me that I’m going to be SoL. ANyways….
Let me know if that works. I’ve been driven bananas by that printer error.

We have a IO here so while not necessarily in the same boat I feel your pain…we’re in a holding pattern waiting of PCIe scsi controllers. We have a Huge Sys Media Vault so add into the equation. I think we lucked out by being govt it takes ages to approve money so while waiting to get the older gen G% the new ones came out. I’m crossing my fingers on the Quad because for us….that will def. last through the transition plus a bit I think.
It seems like a good time to get either really. It is just a real crappy time with hardware. Makes me shudder to remember the Media 100 switchover to OSX.

I’m actually in that very same boat Tom. As I was going through your original post I was thinking..”holy crap and thank god I’m not the only one!”
I’ve only been in the industry for about 7-8yrs and I think I have finally reached a point where I am begining to feel good about my editing. As you said…there’s a feeling when there is a bad cut. For me it’s almost visceral. I’m not school trained so I can’t give the specific reason why it doesn’t work but it just “feels” wrong, and I start thinking of alternatives. When it comes to my design tho…I’m with you. I love and our budget forces me to do the entire scope of edit to graphics design. But I enter into an area I feel very self conscious about…like the first few edit pieces you play for a large audience…good god was I in shambles. I feel I can get by but I’m always looking for new ideas and ways to improve myself in that area.
I think using the specialist branding is a bit tough sometimes. Especially when you start looking at the middle to lower markets. I love it when part of the design process can be farmed out but unfortunatly our budget never allows that. So thats where Jump Backs, ETK, Artbeats etc can come in. So far they have really helped my lack of design skill and experience. BUT!! don’t let them become a crutch. I’ve been cruising around looking at demos and show reels for ideas and to see what other folks are doing. I have been inspired by doing the Total AE series. Not only is this a fantastic resource to coquer the learning curve of AE but there is a ton of design ideas and techniques just under the surface. Just by doing a little looking at what’s out there and looking at things from both a technical (how’d they do that) to the fundamental (why??) I think I feel a little better about things then I would care to let on.
I can tell my coffee is starting to run a little low as I’ve reread this a few times looking to change things…hope my rambling makes a little sense. 🙂

October 26, 2005 at 5:13 pm in reply to: FW 800 on Dual G4 enough for 10 bit Uncompressed?Luckily it sounds as though Mike’s works. But I was about to urge some caution. I’m not totally familiar with firewire cards but I know the main bottleneck in our system when we tried that wasn’t any of the cards but the pci bus speed itself. Maybe you can correct me if i’m wrong with the bus issue but our 1.25 can’t manage 10bit uncomp. without serious drop frame issues.

As I was reading this I was thining to myself…”wouldn’t a dvd be great for this, you can put everything on it and show off all your skills….”
I’m just about to that point of having to raelly polish mine up. Thanks Walter, I feel alot better about that approach now 😀

Just a heads up for future folks who have this problem. I finally got it working again.
After working most of yesterday on his I found out a few things. Alot of people are having the same problem. It seemes to be related to the Digidesign Core Audio Manager not working with the latest quicktime release…..at least that’s the initial finding. There’s something really funky with the latest updates. I worked around my problem by reverting Quicktime to 6.5 using a little installer called Pacifist. Apparently QT 6.5 reverter doesn’t get everything. And I also deleted all my Digidesign stuff. We have a Digi001 that “used” to be installed on this machine. Itunes was also wiped and reinstalled. Everything finally works the way it used to and I have now also taken the opportunity to back everything up the way it should have been.
