Yeah, that sounds like it could be pretty cool and do-able. I’m still waiting for our friend Jan to chime in with some official word. Don’t be shy, Jan! This isn’t the HDV forum- we like you here!

Graeme is 100% correct. The great benefit about shooting to P2 is to leave the limitations of tape behind- including the necessity of shooting discardable or repeating frames. It wouldn’t make sense to re-introduce it, since those frames are discarded “upon capture” and with P2 there is no capture.

Several people have mentioned HD D5 as a mastering format, and while HD D5 kicks major butt, I will mention the same comments I made regarding HD SR, which is that the deck is too expensive to be intergrated into the workflow of a $9000-ish camera. That deck and a P2 camera combined would actually cost more than a Varicam and the 1800 DVCPROHD deck. And it rents up here in NY for around $1800 a day, plus the required insurance. Now if I had a feature film or some sort of long format project, that’s not a problem, but that’s not a deck I could rent on a continual basis or purchase to integrate into the P2 workflow. It’s a matter of budetary mismatch. The Panasonic AJ-HD3700A HD-D5 deck (which records 1080/24p) at $100,000 is simply too expensive to be practical with an under 10k camera.

I’m positive that panasonic will annouce some sort of solution that doesn’t require the use of deck that costs over 10x what the camera costs. The ususal budgetary match is that the required deck costs less than the camera itself, but is somehat similar in price.

    Luis,

Mastering to HD SR seems entirely cost prohibitve for people excited about a camera that costs under 10k. I’d personally do it if I had shot a feature film, but short of a big project like that, I wouldn’t spend the dough. Or, I should say, if I had acess to that kind of dough, I’d have shot on the Varicam from the begininng.

I also think new decks are unlikely to come out seeing as Panasonic just released new decks.

And I’d further be surprised if Panasonic expects people to be mastering out to Sony products. I’m sure they’d much prefer to take care of the entire workflow, soup to nuts, with Panasonic gerar. That way they can ensure compatibility and costs that are in line with their target buyers. At least, I know Sony would never allow such a thing.

However, I am 100% positive that Panaonic will have an easy solution for us. They’re no way a company like that could possibly overlook an issue like this. Hey, that just means more surprises are in store in the next few weeks, and given Panasonic’s track record, they’ll probably be pleasant ones.

Oh yeah, I’ve long thought tape as an acquisition foramt needs to go- that’s why I’m so excited about P2.

As far as “software updates in the new decks” goes- this is exactly my question. I have heard about any new decks being mentioned. If anyone knows anything about a new deck coming out, please post. I thought the contingency was unlikely because just released a new deck- the 1200.
