Hi John, That is exactly what I plan to do on the first big shoot at a cancer center in May…bring my own PA along and have him show the intern the setup and the names of the different types of lights, equipment, etc… For this small shoot in two week, it will just be him and me. In september he starts at a local university, so it might be hard to juggle his schedule to fit mine, but if he’s good, I’ll make it work. I never liked being dependent on one person, so I’m hoping he fits the bill both in personality, work ethic and skill. He did state that is interest is more in editing and not production. Thanks for the replies.

Written very well Mark. I agree with everything you said. Like I said…I’m generous with my time, knowledge and money…if there is interest. This first job is just locking down the tripod and shooting 8 testimonials on a white background…not too exciting, but at least he see the lighting set up, my DV Rack set up and just be in that environment. When I was young and came upon a movie being filmed, I was like a kid in a candy store…I’m hoping this kid will have the same reaction, I think so. What I like about him, is that he is completely moldable…no predisposed way of doing things. Thanks Mark.

Good points Tony. On this first shoot, I can handle it alone as I did for them two weeks ago…I thought it was a good opportunity for him to get used to the equipment. I’m actually a very generous person and my first thought was to pay him no matter what he did, but then I thought as you did…that he is benefiting in his own way. For the first major shoot in May at a hospital I will have my regular assistant who has been with with me for years, so the new kid will mostly observe. I’m hoping that one day he will be an asset and I guess at that time I can re-evaluate the money/benefit situation. As far as something breaking…that could happen to any of us. Thanks for you input…much appreciated.

Thanks guys. I see there is a difference of opinion on the plasma. Mark your suggestion on the images around the video are pure genius. Of course that defeats an add on that I was going to offer…digital signage, but maybe it can work the way you suggested. Do you think it will be over stimulation for the viewer? I’ve never worked with 16:9, so I might need help with that in a different thread. Thanks Mark for the excellent idea.

Isn’t that what “edit in audition” is? If so…that is what I did. I noticed there are additional audio files in my bin that are just the effected files, would I have to unlink the audio/video and manually replace the original audio. A revert to function would be helpful. Thanks.

Thank you Alex. Digital Signage is just one part of the requirement, the other unfortunately is the video I made in 4:3 which I was concerned about. The stock footage I had to use was 4:3 so I had to go with it (Digital Juice’s Video Traxx). I do have a 50″ LCD at home and did the watch the 4:3 video on it and it didn’t look bad. It’s a sony and there is an inbetween mode called Wide Zoom which gently spreads the image out. Are LCD TV’s thin enough to be mounted? Thanks again.

well you certainly are a detail oriented person…a good trait. I can picture the whole segment, for some reason, I also picture blur ins and outs…but I guess you said that with DOF. I will save your suggestion for another shoot…for this one each person interviewed will play in their own flash player window so I don’t have the luxury of a longer form to establish a mood or style. Each clip is its own entity. I should reiterate that the seniors are the audience, not the talent. I’m sure your ideas will help others as well…the beauty of sharing. Thank you

Mark, I’m so glad you agree with me. When I read that article I thought there was something wrong with me that I couldn’t see this guys point. If the talent is a host, that’s different. What do you think about moving the camera, either tilting or panning? It can be effective, but for my purposes, these are senior citizens homes and one is a hospice, I think straight and narrow is the way to go. Plus for web encoding, the less movement the better. Thanks for your insights, the COW definitely attracts a different breed of people…the good kind 🙂
