Hi Brett,
When Premiere scales an image to fit the screen, it scales it up as much as possible without cropping off any of the image. A 1920×1080 clip is exactly a 16:9 ratio. Changing the 1920 to 2048 for 2K throws off that ratio, thus the black bars. You will have to scale a bit more to remove the black bars, and in the process will also be cropping a small bit of the image. Is what it is.

HD or 4K? That is a very important factor in this discussion as 4K frames are 4x bigger than HD.

Hi Amanda,
Are you shooting HD or 4K? Premiere CS6 is not going to do very well with 4K video, and a Core i5 computer is also not up to par for 4K. Shoot and edit as HD if you can. If you don’t need slow motion for anything, 1080p30 may be a good choice to shoot, edit, and deliver.
As for setting up a proper sequence, that is easy: in a New Project, when you drag the first video clip to an empty timeline, Premiere will ask if you want to match the timeline to the clip (if it does not match already). Say Yes. Or just right-click your video clip in the Project Bin and select New Sequence from Clip. This will assure you of having a correctly matching sequence to being editing with.
Then export to match source, meaning if you shot and edited as 1080p30 (29.97 actually), then export the same. For instance select the H.264 export format, and the YouTube HD 1080p preset.
When setting up the Export, check to verify that SOURCE and OUTPUT settings match. Checking frame size, pixel aspect, fields, and frame rate.
In this case:
- 1920×1080
- 1.0 Pixel Aspect
- Progressive
- 29.97

You will see that these 4 parameters match in both the Source and Output summaries. If anything differs, such as frame rate or aspect, that is when you run into quality issues with the exported video. Should all match, unless of course you specifically want to convert an HD source to 720p or SD video, so frame size and pixel aspect might change but you’d want to keep the same frame rate all the way.Thanks

I’m fairly certain the client is requesting an MPEG-2 file for their video server, as a TV or cable station would use. This MPEG-2 file will use different parameters than MPEG-2 DVD format.
“Datarate at 8000 kb/s and a Bitrate of 224 kb/s”
8000 is the VIDEO data rate, with AUDIO being 224
As a starting point, I have selected MPEG-2 as the export Format, and chose the DG FastChannel 480 Preset, as that preset is for a playout server. This gets us in the ballpark, then a few tweaks need to be made.
The client needs to get you more specific information yet, such as:
- 4:3 or 16:9
- Progressive, Upper Field, or Lower Field
- MPEG or Dolby Audio
Under the VIDEO tab, I’ve changed 4:3 to 16:9, and Lower Field to Progressive, and video bitrate to 8. Just guessing on aspect ratio and fields though, check with client for their preference.
Under the AUDIO tab, MPEG audio was the default and I only changed bit rate to 224.
I’m sure this will be helpful to get you going, but definitely consult with client to get additional details as mentioned above.

So I have never actually used queue feature. In Premiere, I use File > Export > Media
Then select MPEG-2 DVD as Format
Then appropriate preset, like NTSC DV Wide Progressive
I set desired bit rate and export, then import resulting assets into Encore and it sees the video as 16:9 and I never have to change anything in Encore, I just author my disc.Thanks

I have put as much as 3 hours on a single layer DVD, but it was a lock-down talking head shot so it compressed nicely. For most typical videos, I would not push past two hours usually.
For VHS to DVD transfers, I have a stand-alone DVD recorder unit that was under $200, with presets for 1 or 2-hour record modes direct to DVD. That’s the most cost-effective way to do these, versus capturing the tape, converting to MPEG-2, authoring for DVD, then burning. Too much labor. Although if you need to do color correction or cut stuff out, that forces the latter method then.

Not much to research. Right-click clip in timeline and select Speed/Duration. Set desired speed percentage, then under Time Interpolation, choose Optical Flow.
As the source is only 24p, you have less frames per second to start with so smooth slow mo will be harder to achieve.

What frame rate is source clip, and sequence? Have you tried Optical Flow setting in Speed Change? This will manufacturer new “in-between” frames so you don’t have choppy motion with repeated frames. Depending on motion in source footage, can work pretty well.
