  • FCP is locked to look on the local drive for the Master Templates.

But, looks like As long as you put an identical copy of your custom master templates folder in the “\library\application support\final cut studio\motion\templates” path on each editor, and you are using 6.0.3 or later, all editors will be able to use the templates on each others projects and rendered material does not go offline. It also appears that Final Cut knows to look in the OS drive and find the templates either in the new path mentioned above(6.0.3 and after), or the older user folder path(pre 6.0.3).

If you want to make a system wide change to the master templates you will need to copy the updated folder to each edit bay individually.

I have this solution in practice right now.

  • I am also looking to find a way to share the Master Templates in FCP. If anybody has any ideas about how to point FCP to an custom location (like an XSAN folder) for these master templates other than “/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Studio” I would love to know how your thoughts.

Yes, you can re-install the Motion content to XSAN and have motion point there and it is shared, but it does not change the location where Final Cut Pro is wanting to see the Master Templates.

Like Jared says above, it is not a preference within Final Cut.

I want to be able to construct a FCP project that contains multiple custom HD Master Templates on the timeline(which requires many hours of rendering), and then open it and render it on a different machine(lets call it a render bay)via VNC. This would leave the original edit bay free to work on other projects. The only thing I can find that prevents this workflow is that the Master Templates don’t travel with the project.

It seems as though Apple made Master Templates to work across multiple users on the same PC recently, but never thought to make them work across multiple machines.

Has anyone had experience with this problem and Final Cut Server? I don’t think that Final Cut Server would help this situation either.
