September 10, 2015 at 5:58 pm in reply to: What causes clip to flutter?

I have the older tape based camcorder so I don’t have the card.

I hook up a fire wire card and capture the footage into my computer that way.

The flutter is not a big issue, does not happen much.

One clip had it, but without doing anything, the flutter stopped.

There is one other clip that has the flutter.

I’m just going to recapture it. The flutter is not on the original footage.

September 10, 2015 at 5:55 pm in reply to: Why is sound level not consistent?

Thanks John. I should have mentioned, I am using the AT2020 usb that I bought.

Most all of the time I check the Options, Preferences, Audio device and make sure that the at2020 is selected.

Can I swear I did that every time? No but frequently.

Also, it seems as though when I plugged the mic usb cord in, when my computer was on, that was when the sound was lower.

Then I started turning the computer off and plugging the mic usb cord in and it seems as though that is when it recorded at the higher level. I am sure that the couple of time I did that it came louder – the sound.

So I guess I’ll just keep doing that.

I’m also wondering if the usb port is just loose so that the usb plug simply is not in right.

I.e. my external harddrive cuts out of the cord plug to the usb cord is moved slightly.

  • I figured out why I wasn’t seeing the edit, placement etc tabs. You see then when you are in the legacy text but not when in just regular text and title.

    Haha another mystery solved!

  • Oddly enough, I found out today that you have to put the text on a timeline above the video clip if you want the video to show through.

I am somewhat baffled, however, as yesterday I had the text right in the same timeline as the video and I can swear the video showed in the back ground. I would rather do it that way. Baffling how it worked that way yesterday???

  • Yes I used the checkerboard but it’s still not showing the video.

Oddly enough, yesterday, I added some text in the exact same way and they video showed.???

So I don’t know why it’s not showing through today???

  • Thanks John,

Yup – I had just figured it out and was coming back to say I had figured it ou.

    Yes – options, preferences worked!

    Thanks!

  • “In Cold Blood” is on. Seeing that movie, just hammers home your statement, that it’s the story that matters. What a story. Totally riveting.

  • Sure np – light. Yes – I have been learning about light. The funny thing is, I did not know for awhile that my camcorder has an adjustment to lighten up a dark picture and vice versa. I finally realized it.

Once I was at the top of the Bunker Hill Monument shooting out this tiny window. Well the window was not open but I was way up there high and you can see all over. Because I did not know to adjust the exposure, I actually got the best shot ever as the sun was coming and shining over the port of Boston and it’s an epic view and the fact I did not adjust the camera exposure made it an incredible shot. It’s my first scene now. Had I adjusted the exposure, it would not have been as good.

I mostly just use the camcorder on auto focus but now, when I need to, I can increase or decrease the exposure as on auto, there are limits to how light or dark it will pick up.

But I’m picking up on the light thingy.

As far as the story, I was reading an old book about the first day of the revolution that is in the public domain. I said, wow this is an awesome story and then I realized all the spots they were talking about in the book were right near where I lived so I went and video taped them all. I will use the book as my voice over as it’s in the public domain.

The name of the book is, The Battle of April 19th, 1775 in Lexington, Concord and Lincoln.

Here’s a link to it on Hathi Trust

Hathi trust is cool as there are 1000’s of books you can read for free that are in the public domain.

At first, I felt like I was cheating just using a book someone else wrote but then I realized, that’s where most Hollywood people get the topics for their movies. And w the books in public domain, you don’t even have to buy the rights.

Then I realized, that’s where Disney got the ideas for most of his movies and loads and loads of Hollywood movies are simply based on books someone else wrote. As far as I know, Spielberg never wrote anything! Not that what I did is a Hollywood movie nor am I anywhere close to a Spielberg!

Oh wow. Great! Cool. I felt kinda stupid asking that question but maybe not. I’m going to take the pictures off of the screen w my 35 mm and see if there is a difference w live shots.

It worked pretty good when I video taped pics out of books (in the public domain) and put them in my video project. The pictures looked perfectly fine in the video.

I know taking pics w the 35 mm off of the screen shots is not the same but all I have to do is take a few shots w my camera and see how they look compared to live shots taken.

I’ve been working on this project for 3 years as I can only do it in off hours and there were lots of times I could not work on it at all but Im pretty much had it w going all over the place and just want to get it done now.

    Thanks again!

  • “What you want for voice over work is a Condenser mic with a Large Diaphragm and that mic has both.”

Oh wow. Good stuff! Amazing how inexpensive broadcast quality video equipment is now. My camcorder cost about $1,000 and I’m told it’s broadcast quality.

Prob lots of beginners like me thinking they can make shows and sell them.

I read an article by a top video guy that said it’s a real longshot to sell a show or video to cable or tv. They always have other contacts that they give the work to and even if you do sell something, you might be lucky to get $10,000. Of course, you are simply selling the broadcast rights in certain areas. Of course, I’m telling you stuff you already know.

However, in the article, the video dude said there IS a market for educational purposes, i.e. schools. Well I don’t know much it could be a lot of wasted time but it’s something I wanted to do anyways.

The part I did not realize when I bought my camcorder and started to do this, is that the difficult part is not shooting the footage but the EDITING!

But I’m getting it a little at a time.

I just watched a Youtube video on titles. Doesn’t look too hard.

Hopefully I’ll finish my project. It’s all about battle route for the day of the revolution. I video taped all the key points along the route. There’s lots of books that have done the same thing using pictures so I simply did a video. Nobody did that yet, as far as I know. Then I’ll put the pics into a book. Although many books like that have been done, mine has the best and most pictures and in color. Most of the older books that did this are in black and white.
