Hook the DV deck up to the DVD deck with firewire. Can you play a DV tape and get it to appear on the DVD deck?
There may be something set wrong in the DVD deck and having a DV tape playing is the easiest way to trouble-shoot that. If you can get that to work and then it STILL won’t work, it might be that Final Cut doesn’t “see” the DVD deck as a deck. Anyway, I’d confirm that the DVD deck is accepting signals over the firewire before you mess around with Final Cut too much.

1-pass and 2-pass shouldn’t look any different. The point of 2-pass is to look the same as 1-pass but take up less space on the disc.
How much video (time-wise) are you trying to put on each disc? That’s what makes the most difference when trying to pick a setting.
Also, you might get a slight difference capturing in some kind of format other than DV since you’d be avoiding the DV compression. BUT I don’t think it would be a heck of a big difference. If you have the ability to capture 8-bit SD then go for it, but if you can’t do that it’s certainly not worth buying more hardware or anything. I doubt it’s a really big deal for this kind of thing.

DVD Studio Pro just uses Compressor when it does compress, so if you’re having trouble it’ll be the same there. We should probably try to figure it out in Compressor since it gives you more options to explore.
Are you using a preset? How long is this video? If it’s under an hour try duplicating one of the presets and then altering the duplicate to a CBR with a bit-rate of 7.0. Be sure to also compress your audio to a Dolby 2.0 AC3. If the video is some other time, let us know what it is.

Run that quicktime file through Compressor or simply Export from Final Cut using Compressor.
Either way, compress it to MPEG II before you bring it into DVD Studio Pro. DVD SP can compress video but I guess it doesn’t do HDV? Even if it did, you’re better off compressing before you work on the DVD as you’ll be able to build and burn the disc very quickly once you’re done working. It’s much better for testing purposes as you work on the DVD.

As far as I am aware, using Target Disk Mode is no different than having any other firewire400 drive.
I haven’t used it enough to say for sure, but I’ve never heard otherwise.

Intel vs. PPC should have nothing at all to do with this. You should focus on Final Cut itself.
Both computers are Final Cut 5.1.2? Is Final Cut set to display waveforms on the Intel Mac or are they turned off? Have you seen them anywhere else in the project or are they missing from everywhere?

Ah, didn’t hear about the dual-boot.
Yes, at the step where I say “format the drive” then go on and instal OS X onto it. Once you’re up and running, shut it down and put the 2nd drive in. I’m pretty sure you can then go into the System Preferences of either system and select the “Startup Disk” icon to restart as the other system.

I think Martin is talking about the Apple application “Mail,” which is yet more proof of what a terrible name that is. If we can’t even talk about it without getting confused about whether or not it’s the program or a service then they really should change the name.
ANYWAY, I have heard that putting AOL mail into Apple’s “Mail.app” program is impossible. I’ve also read pages like this:

It seems that AOL is moving to have everything work through their webpage now so I’m really not sure WHAT they want you to do these days. Hopefully that unofficial page will work for you.

The question mark means it sees the drive but there is nothing on it.
I suggest putting your OS X CD in and re-starting the computer with that. (If you can’t eject the drive, restart the computer while holding the mouse-button down. Then restart again holding the “C” key.)
Once the CD boots, find Disc Utility in there. Format the drive, then shut down the computer, put the original drive back in its place and move the new drive down a space. Now that it’s formatted, hopefully the computer will see it properly. If it doesn’t it’s possible there’s something wrong with the cables in that bay.
