  • I will second a couple things mark pointed out. Always learn about design principles. You really have to use both sides of your brain with this stuff. You need to know the sort-of engineering of how to use Photoshop, AE, etc. (how to keyframe, add a layer…) and then you need to know how to design (make a color palette or mood board, use rule of thirds, balanced images…) and you need inspiration to fill the blank page. Plus trends evolve so stay active on blogs and forums or read Communication Arts.

Always keep working at it and be willing to listen to others, like you are doing now. So you are on the right track.

Jon, thank you for your excellent explanation of this phenomenon. Your first example is exactly what I was trying to do. I tried Jeremy’s suggestion of doing a pre-render, but apparently that is still in conflict with this alpha channel issue. So I suppose even if I made a movie w/ alpha channel and brought it back into AE, it would still have this issue.

Thankfully the part that was breaking was a solid color so I just rotoscoped a solid color matte over the breakage. I would love to find a way to pull off this effect in the future, but in the meantime I suppose it will just have to be an effect that sounds simple in my head but is ridiculously complex for AE.

Thanks for all of your help, tips and explanations everyone, it was much appreciated!

Dave, thanks for the link. I’ve been going over this several time. If inside my PreComp is my Vector based text and shape and my 3D movement, and in my main comp, Continuous Rasterization is off and the Puppet Tool applied to the PreComp, according to this article, that SHOULD work, should it not? It doesn’t seem to work for me.

    Thanks,

If some people see you as “the competition” they might be hesitant to rent from you, so I would focus on getting the word out to folks who are a little outside your niche. Also, I would recommend paying an attorney to write, or at least look over your agreement contract.

I bought an NX5U a year ago and have been happy with it, so I hope you enjoy it too. Good luck!

I think it is a fairly recognized term. It all depends on the client though. Everyone communicates differently and you need to put it into words they will understand. If this is too much for them, just spell it out, for instance-

“Satellite imagery tracks the van as it races from the Vance Refrigeration store to the customer’s house.”

These aren’t words that will appear on screen, so just focus on painting the best mental picture you can.

Vimeo may be having some internal problems, but I’m still rooting for them. We use them to display online, branded videos and they have a fantastic system for client approvals in their pro accounts. They are doing a good job of differentiating themselves from Youtube, and pending them keeping their focus and act together, they could have a good business going. If they can’t seem keep the focus and everyone inside playing as a team, perhaps selling off a portion of their company that can provide that is what would be best for Vimeo. And for all of us who use it.

  • [Mark Suszko] “I would suggest you convert your sales training into something people buy to use for themselves”

I think Mark has a good idea here Jon. There may not be much demand for a commissioned salesperson, but if you have a training program ready to go with a lot of experience and knowledge behind it, why not convert that into something consumable. It would be great for people venturing out on their own or college kids looking for their next step. Something to think about.

We are currently switching over to our new Vimeo Pro account. They have been switching their focus to help folks like us and I like what they have to offer for client reviews. Walter Biscardi is doing it to, here is what he wrote:
