Well, since I’m creating things that are played in theaters (film festivals)…24 FPS is where the projects start. I won’t be changing that, as I don’t believe DCPs have a 23.976 FPS option. (Even if they did, film festivals usually require 24 FPS DCPs, and I’ve had too many issues trying to get theaters to play 3D DCPs at non-24 FPS rates.)
Any idea on what the Hollywood studios generally do when converting their 24 FPS films onto blu-ray?

FYI — I tried rendering 24 FPS to 23.976 with no resampling. On a long smooth tracking shot, I could see a very obvious dropped frame. It looked terrible, so I went back to altering the video to play back at 23.976 so that no frames are dropped and stretched the audio to match the new duration.

Good idea. I will try this and see if I notice any jerky motion because of skipped frames.

Just re-rendering a 24 FPS video to 23.976 gives me the occasional (visually unacceptable) frame blending artifact from Sony Vegas, which is how I originally realized 24p doesn’t mean 24 FPS. I did the playback rate at .999 trick and stretched the audio appropriately as I described in my original post. I need to spend a little more time studying the results, but the change doesn’t appear noticeable and there’s no frame blending artifacts.

Yep, that was the issue. It’s a bit disappointing that automation in Twixtor doesn’t work with stereoscopic material in Sony Vegas, but I’ve been able to work around it.

OK, it appears I may have discovered a bug with Twixtor. I’m working with stereoscopic material in Vegas Pro. Twixtor doesn’t seem to obey the Mark Segments when working with stereoscopic clips. If I work with monoscopic material, it appears to work. I’ll experiment further and report my results.
