  • I’ve had the “Timecode Break” error come up in situations where there was an issue with the Capture Scratch RAID. The drive was losing speed constantly during the transfer until the drive’s throughput was lower than the captured video’s. What really should have come up as a dropped frame error was seen as a timecode break by FCP, which started up the infinite VTR crawl. That could be a thing to cross off the possible causes list. Running some kind of diskwhack test like AJA’s would quickly tell you if that’s your case. After I fixed the HDD issue, I never saw the error again.

  • Hi Jean,

Off the top of my head, the first thing I think of is the recording format setting. Could it be that the System Rec Format in the System Menu is set to HDCamSR? I’m not close to the deck to check other settings that could be at issue. You may want to post in the dedicated SRW-5500/5800 forum here on the COW.

    Hi Steve,

Do you have the Sony PDZKP1 plugin? If so, you can get that setting… almost. If you don’t have it yet, get it here: https://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/resource.downloads

Using the appropriate output format while exporting though the plugin should get most settings correct. In this case, it looks like the “XDCAM HD422 1080i60 CBR” is the one. The GOP and bitrate will be correct. MXF only uses SMPTE 436M VANC so that’s good as well.

There’s something weird in your audio specs, though. 48kHz sample rate is perfect but “16 bps playback max sample size” doesn’t really mean anything in audio. I imagine it’s supposed to mean the audio should be 16-bit. The problem is that this MXF setup can only use 24-bit audio. The XDCam MXF formats that use 16-bit audio are the EX and non-422-HD and those can’t have 8 tracks, at least through the FCP export plugin. There’s an inconsistency there.

If you can confirm that the audio should be 24-bit audio in that XDCam HD422 file, you’re golden. If it really is 16-bit, you’re kind of stuck and can’t export that with the Sony FCP plugin. Every time I’m asked for such a file for broadcast, it’s always 24-bit.

  • Are you editing to tape in Editing mode or Mastering mode? That sounds like you’re set to Mastering, in which case you can’t set an out point in the ETT window. Check that you are in Editing mode on the dialog next to the Black & Code button. It could be that simple…

Is the AJA Control Panel installed on the system? In there, under the Info tab, you have the Hardware ID which should answer the question.

    Hi,

I’m sorry I don’t really have an answer for you. Most of us here on the COW are involved in the production side of things. Your question really is about live sound reinforcement. You might have more luck on a more focused SR forum such as https://srforums.prosoundweb.com/ for specific model comparisons.

  • Hi Sarah,

That’s a mighty weird issue you have there. That sounds very specific to the hardware or its drivers. A quick search didn’t turn up any drivers for this tablet from AipTek, so that wouldn’t be it. Did you install any software for the tablet?

Does the installation of the tablet also affect keyboard behaviour in other software? Does the strange behaviour disappear if you remove the tablet? One thing worth checking is your keyboard language system setting. Some software is very sensitive to that (not sure about PT9) and will only work correctly with the US keyboard setting. Some control devices change that setting when installed, so that might be it.

If this little troubleshoot gets you nowhere, I suggest you come over to the PT9 Mac forum on https://duc.avid.com/ an inquire there. There are more users, so a better chance that someone will have encountered that specific hardware.

The Lt/Rt is a stereo mix containing center and mono surround hidden in there through phase manipulation. When played through any system, it’s a simple stereo mix, but when played through the correct decoder it’s a (kind of) 4.0 mix. It’s basically what Dolby called ProLogic on the consumer’s side. In almost all cases now, you can just put the true stereo mix on tracks 7-8. Lt/Rt is a bit of a leftover from surround sound workflows from a few years back and is what a lot of fold-down tools will output but is getting quite ancient. I haven’t been asked specifically for an Lt/Rt mix in quite a while. If what you have is a stereo mix, put that in and all should be good.

If the files you import into Compressor already comprise the 8 audio tracks in the correct order, there is the “SMPTE DTV” audio channels setting for Quicktime movies which is exactly what you want. Assemble your tracks in FCP in the correct SMPTE302M order (L R C LFE Ls Rs Lt Rt), export your sequence and bring the resulting file into Compressor, edit your Compressor preset to use this Channels setting and that should do it. I do this on a regular basis without problems. If you go straight from the sequence and Send To Compressor, this Channels setting doesn’t work, as FCP folds down to stereo before sending to Compressor.
