I recently bought an HP “Media” PC [9040] with NVidia GeForce 8400GS which has DVI, S Video and HMDI out. I have an HDTV connected to the HMDI and 2 PC monitors connected to the DVI via a Matrox Dual2Go.

It works. The HDTV shows the PC desktop, it is an extension of the desktop–you can drag windows onto it. I use it to play AVIs I edited and then rendered in Vegas, or I can undock and drag the Vegas Preview window there. I’d rather have HDMI TV out from the PC for viewing stuff I’ve edited so I can see my work as pure TV, closer to the way my intended viewer will see it via DVD, but at least this is on a $1000 PC with an external add-on [Dual2Go] without cracking the case. Sometimes there seems to be issues with the NVidia recognizing that the TV is there. Perhaps If I remember to turn on the TV before turning on the PC . . . .. When it doesn’t recognize it, I have to open NVidia and drill down to re-set the multiple display feature.

I’m interested to see what HD looks like with this method when I get an HD cam. [Maybe a Sony HVR-Z7?]

I find it great to be able to stretch the Vegas window across a 2nd monitor. Having a timeline twice as long is very helpful. You have more room to work and can keep a better perspective of your project.

Thanks Laszlo. Yes, that looks like what I’m trying to do https://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/crepro/products/parhelia/apve.php

however, I was hoping the hardware I have can do it, since the graphic card that came with it, Nvida 8400GS has an HDMI output presumably for a HD TV, since its a “Media PC” designed to record TV programs & play them back, tho I’m using it with Vegas, not TV watching. The settings for the nvida recognizes that it is a TV, but seems to treat it a PC monitor rather than a TV. The Matrox looks perfect, but $300 + I was hoping I’d not have to spend.
