I agree with Zane 100%. When we do video projects for our clients we always do the compression in house. It makes it easier for the client to have a one stop shop. Adding another vendor just complicates things.
Good luck.

July 26, 2008 at 11:34 pm in reply to: Graphics and effects companies that contract out for commercial productionHey Douglas and welcome. Please check out my companies website at http://www.ecgprod.com. We do a ton of animation and motion graphics work and our rates are very competitive. We recently created a a complete graphics package for the Travel Channel and we start a new build next month for them as well.
I would also do what Walter suggested and check out the services offered section on the cow. That way you can look and compare companies and talent to find exactly what you are looking for.
If you want have a look at our graphics blog at http://www.ecggraphics.com
Good luck with your search!

That’s the worst! Maybe most people are dis-honest. Probably better to err on the side of caution. Good luck with the four other projects you’re working on Walter.

First of all congrats on finishing the project.
There are many ways to sell something to a television network. In my experience with selling to cable networks I have found the best way is to find out who the head of programming for a particular network is or the staff Executive Producer. Many cable networks have Executive Producers whose job it is to seek out new programming. When you watch the credits for a particular show you will see the production company’s EP credit and many times at the very end you will see a credit that says…
Executive Producer for Discovery Networks
Joe BlowI always try to get in contact with that person via e-mail and phone. In the first e-mail I send the treatment and a short bio about myself. Many times they will not respond and that’s when persistence is key. Once I make contact with them I ask them if I can send them a DVD of my pilot/film. Most times they say yes and they may ask you to sign a legal document stating that if they release a show that is similar to yours that you won’t sue. That’s a little scary but most people are honest.
This is just one approach that has been successful for me I can’t wait to see the other suggestions from other folks on the forum.
Good luck and much success.

Frank, we do a good deal of graphics work for several cable outlets and production companies that supply content to them. We have found it is best to charge hourly. For HD motion graphics containing mostly 2D elements it’s $90hr, for SD it’s $80hr. If we are working with Maya or C4D we charge anywhere from $125hr to $150hr depending on the complexity of the project. We also do a few days of Sampling where we give our clients several style frames to choose from so we don’t waste time animating something they will not like. We charge $60hr for sampling and style frames.
Also I have been told that we are less expensive than other graphic houses. So you may want to charge more. I’m curious what others will tell you.
Good luck!
