OK, it sounds a bit like you haven’t been ‘assimilated’ into X yet. I get where you’re coming from, I ws the same until I had a Eureka moment. Treat projects as you would timelines in 7, and if you want to organise them more sensibly separate them using folders – a folder for each ‘Project’ (using FCP7 parlance). You can switch back and forth almost as quickly in this way as you can in 7 – OK not quite as fast as tabbing, but usably fast. Copy and paste between projects as you would in 7.
Use Auditions where possible, and compound clips work very well in X too.
Use Event Manager X to switch off unwanted events.
Once you get used to working in this way and stop fighting X’s organisational hierarchy, you’ll find it much easier.

Ditto. Haven’t seen any Premiere seats in any of the suites I’ve worked in, and none of the tech staff I’ve had contact with are talking anything other than Avid and FCP7. Will keep an eye out though…

Yeah, it’s a bummer. I could go for the IO Express, but then I can’t do 2K or 3D and it’s twice the price – or I have to get an Apple TB display rather than use one of my 23″ Cinema Displays. I guess BMD didn’t want to pay for 2 ports – licensing perhaps? There’s a gap in the market there though, for sure.

Whilst we’re on the subject, does anyone do a Thunderbolt ‘hub’? I’m looking for a solution whereby I can use one of Blackmagics Thunderbolt IO boxes alongside an external monitor. Only snag is I’m driving it from my 13″ MBP so only 1 TB port – I need at least two. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Bear in mind that pasting attributes pastes ALL attributes – you can’t choose which to paste as you could in legacy FCP. At least removing the unwanted attributes is easier with the inspector pane. PITA I know, and I hope that Apple will be forthcoming in changing this.

I totally agree. It looks great, and I applaud BMD for going down the smaller chip route – I’m fed up with seeing DSLR footage that has DOF sooo thin for that ‘arty’ look – no, IT”S JUST OUT OF FOCUS!!. I think their design should yield controllable DOF so one can easily go either way. Form factor is unusual but I think it will work, especially with a small rig. I’d pretty much decided to bit the bullet on Resolve and Ultrascope as an upgrade to my current Color based suite, so I think I’ll be adding a camera too given it would be silly not to at that price point.
My only reason for steering the OP off that is cost. I think to get a realistically usable setup with lenses and SSD’s you’d be looking at around 5k. Still a bargain if the promise lives up to the hype but beyond the OP’s budget.

If you’re doing a lot of ‘run and gun’ style shooting you would be better served by a dedicated video camera such as the XF100 – being able to record sound without a separate recorder and being able to plug XLRs straight in is a big plus IMHO. The Canon being a 50mb/s machine will give excellent quality too, though most any modern pro HD camera will give you quality enough for web and SD DVD.
Left-field suggestion would be something like a Panasonic GH2, and a few bits of grip/sound kit to make it work ergonomically – hacked (there’s a very well developed firmware hack out for it now ) the quality available is outstanding, but you’d sacrifice a little usability for that. Stunning results in the right hands though, and would come in on budget.

It’s useful in that you can save your CC as a ‘grade’, but it doesn’t include shape data (so no vignettes or selective CC) and the list becomes pretty long and unwieldy if you’ve a lot to correct. To be truly useful the presets need to save shape and mask data, and Apple need to make it so you can copy corrections (either one or multiple) from clip to clip. I know you can ‘paste attributes’ but this takes all filters, crop and mask, and unlike 7 you can’t choose. So making it simpler has made my job harder. Hoping this is addressed in a future revision…

Agreed, anything that boost the capabilities of the Color board would be great. I too was a bit flummoxed by it at first being a ‘Color’ man, but the more I played with it the more I got to love it. Exposure alone is a powerful tool.
Being able to drag and drop from the inspector to other clips as in 7 would speed things up immeasurably too.
So it’s a ‘yes to all the above’ from me!!

Humberto, you mentioned your external HD is a Western Digital passport. Is this USB? If so that’s your problem with regard to disk speed – as many have said here before, NEVER use USB for editing from. The sustained throughput of your video files simply isn’t up to it and it WILL crash or at very least drop frames.
I’ve cut XDCamEX35, 50 and DVCPro100 happily in X from a firewire 800 drive (Lacie Rugged and G-Tech) and these will be fine. No need to go to a RAID if portability is necessary – just a good quality firewire 800 will be fine for you. Don’t let it get too full (no more than 80%) and I reckon you’ll be set.
