Technically, the Panasonic GH2 is not a DSLR. Since it has no mirror, it’s an EVIL camera. (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens). This, and the 4/3 sensor make for a more compact camera. I bought a Voigtlander micro 4/3’s to F adapter so I can easily use my Nikon lenses. The sensor size affects your field of view, so with the GH2 a 50mm lens will look more like a 100mm lens. Some of the great features are; swivel lcd screen, mic input, onscreen audio meters and histogram while recording, no moire, no record time limit, no overheating. There a ton of good samples online, but here is a couple of things I’ve shot with the GH2:

My guess is that the flood was orchestrated by Other World Computing in order to drive sales of their SSD’s. Those guys are crafty.

Don’t overlook the mind-blowing Panasonic GH2. It will shoot in 1080i, but the 24p is so sweet it would be a shame not to use it.

I don’t know about shelf-life, but the new & expensive SSD I put in my Mac Pro as a system drive only lasted 10 months before dying. Up ’til then, I had never lost a hard drive during my 11 years in this business.

If you have an iPod touch, you can just get the HDMI adapter and play out to the screen. In order to loop playback, you need to create a playlist in iTunes and add the video to it.

I suggest taking a look at the Wiebetech RTX 220-QR. You put in two bare drives (no trays required) and run it in RAID 1, which just mirrors your data, so if one drive fails, you have another with the same data. At the end of the day, you take one drive out and put it in a DriveBox and store it in a fireproof safe or take it offsite with you. When you run out of space, you put in two new drives and go from there. A possible downside is the speed. Over ESATA, you’ll get around 100MB/s. This is fine for my workflow with AVCHD.

About going from Final Cut Pro 7 to Final Cut Pro X
Before you start sending emails asking why we didn’t do the opposite, since that’s what everyone really wants, let me explain. Back in my initial briefing for Final Cut Pro X, I asked about the transfer and got the distinct impression that someone was already working on it (perhaps even Apple, it was vague). We’re a small software developer and can’t run the risk of spending considerable development effort to discover that a better funded competitor will come out with a similar product and kill our sales. So we chose to focus on a tool that adds value with less risk of competition.
