This may be a controversial choice but I voluntarily endured the Last Samurai a few weeks ago.

And Russian Ark: A good example of why films usually ARE edited!

Not unless it gets held up at customs. Then it’ll cost just as much 😉

    Just out of interest:

I’ve never installed a tryout version of AE on a system that I’m actually running my main version of AE on. I guess there’s no issue with having both installed on one machine (an iBook in this case!)?

As far as I’m aware it’s a Firewire issue (somebody correct me if I’m wrong!). If you’ve got a deck with RS422 control on then you should be able to do it, but the Firewire control won’t allow inserts.

  • Hello

Thanks for the reply… and sorry for my late reply! Been away at a film festival….

Anyway! everything seems to be up and running OK. I’m ouputting to tape OK, and I’ve also got signal up in the vo tool now!

But next problem concerning the vo tool….

Now I’ve set the external vid to ‘off’ there’s obviously no audio coming out of the decklink (as well as no vid). Sorry to keep drawing comparisons with Cinewave, but I’m used to being able to a voiceover session with the video output active and sending a signal to the video monitor, and also the audio signal coming out to my mixer where I can get a good mix between the timeline sound and voiceover sound for monitoring. Presumably I can run some audio monitoring from the headphone out of my G4, but is there any way of hearing it while actually voicing as an output from the decklink?

    Cheers

  • Hi Luke

    Thanks for the reply.

So, just to make sure I understand properly: to output to the SP, I need to be connected both in and out of the Decklink? At the moment all my component connections go through a patchbay so if the decklink output is connected to the SP input through this, do I also need to have the SP output connected to the decklink input?

I know there was a similar thing when I was using Cinewave with the SDI connection and the in and out had to be connected at the same time. Is it a similar situation with the decklink (whether SDI or component)?

    Thanks for the help
    Jamie

    It’s version 4.5 I’m running.

I stripped the OS back to 10.3.8, QT to 6.5.2 and now it works like a dream. Now I’m gonna go kick the a** of the monkey that installed the wrong versions and took two days out of my editing time!!! 🙂

    Cheers

    Thanks for the reply Luke.

That all sounds like it may be where my problems are. Everything was actually installed by the guys we get our kit from, so I *presumed* they knew what they were doing. Looks like I may need to undo a thing or two 😉

The main problem may be that we’re still running FCPHD, not FCP5. I thought when I saw QT7 on there it was a bit odd. Now it appears I’ll need to strip it back to QT6.5.2 for the time being.

Thanks for the help. I’ll let you know how it all works!

    Sorted it!

Repaired permissions then restarted and everything’s back to normal. Thanks! 🙂

By the way, Walter: I haven’t looked at your website for a while, but that is the best editing facilities ever!!! Cool, much better than just sitting in a white room.

I shall think of your Tom n Jerry inspired kitchen the next time I’m making a cup of tea 🙂
