Correction, I was reading the Blackmagic Disk Drive Speed test results wrong, the READ Speed clocked in at 105 MBPS for 10 bit 4:4:4 1080/60i.

No not a RAID with a Card, it’s two Seagate Baracuda 750 GB Drives set up as a RAID with Disc Utility. I just ran Blackmagic’s drive speed test app and the RAID read time is clocking in at only 28 MBPS for 10 bit 4:4:4 1080/60i. That seems terribly slow considering that the FCP 7 manual suggests a speed of 220 MBPS for 1920×1080 29.97 using Apple Pro Res 422 HQ. I did another test selecting the DVCPRO HD codec from the “gear” drop down menu in the preferences settings in Log And Transfer, the result was better, actually got through the clip a couple of times without stuttering playback, but not consistently, it still hiccups once or twice on playback. Looks Like I need some faster drives, any recommendations short of a full blown external RAID which is out of my price range right now.

besides the slightly green look of the auto whites this doesn’t sound like the same camera I have.

DVI to HDMI adaptor? Is there really such a thing? That would be a lot cheaper than upgrading my video card.

I’m just tryin’ to kill 2 birds with one stone by using the same monitor in the field and in the edit room, in the field I need HD/SDI and in the edit room I need HDMI because I have the Blackmagic Intensity card and I don’t want to drop another $995 for an upgraded card with HD/SDI i/o.

pixel res for the JVC monitor is only 1440×900, the Marshall V-R171-IMD-HDSDI 17″ LCD Monitor costs about the same after the $400 rebate from JVC and it has 1920×1200 pixel res, however, no DVI or HDMI connection.

I also switched mid-project and I had no problems at all. I recently purchased the Panasonic HPX300 and I was eager to see how FCP 7 would handle native AVC-I 100 footage from the P2 Card during Log and Transfer, and it worked great. Main let down is that while this is a big improvement over having to transfer the clips as Apple Pro Res Wrapper Files, it sure would be nice to some day be able to just drag and drop MXF files directly from the P2 Card folders into a new FCP project Bin.

I’m also looking for a moderately priced HD monitor for both editing and in the field, but I have the HPX300, which does not have HDMI. However, I have the Blackmagic Intensity card in my Mac so I could monitor using HDMI in post, but in the field the monitor has to be able to accept HD-SDI. My price range is around $2000. Any suggestions?

Although I’ve only had the HPX300 for a few weeks I’m noticing that auto whites without any manipulation tend to look a tad on the green side when I look at the footage in post. Color Correction filters in FCP can easily bring those greens down, but in the field I just cheat it by placing a 1/8 or 1/4 plus green filter in front of the lens when pulling the auto white, depending on how much green I want to pull out. If you’re to rushed to pull an auto white and have to rely on the preset then you may have to “fix it in post.”

You sound like you know what you’re doing but I’ll ask the obvious anyway, are you sure you don’t inadvertantly have the ND Filter in, or perhaps the wheel not fully clicked to the off position. I have the HPX300 and I tested some low light footage under a street lamp and it looks clean at 0db, and acceptable even at +9 db.
