I suppose what I’m trying to get advice on, is there a ballpark rule for setting a compressor for a voice track?

From what I’ve tried, the attack and release seems to confuse me an make things worse. Or to bring quiet passages up, should I have a low threshold on the compressor and if so, how should the attack and release be? I’m a bit confused…

Ideally, riding gain would be the best, but not always possible, like I’ve just learned…
Any advice would be great!

Thanks Ty,

I can see in practise that this would be the best method on record, however I’m in post now and wondering if using a compressor would help?

Is this general practise though- to use the line level rather than mic level?
