  • Thanks for the reply. To be honest, I’d rather not have to go the MPEG2-analogue-DV-MPEG4.AVC route. I’d prefer to stay in the digital domain and do as few codec-hops as possible.

    Thanks,
    Jack

  • Hi Tim,

Very interesting stuff, thanks loads for that detailed reply. I’ll give it a go later.

If you get a chance, please could you take a look at the Importing_From_a_DVD page on the Movie Making Manual and update it with your great knowledge? If you don’t have the time to edit the page yourself, please could I paraphrase your last reply? (it’s very easy to edit)

    Many thanks,
    Jack

  • Ah, interesting.

How do you change the “export size”? Is this “export size setting” a usable work-around?

    Many thanks,
    Jack

  • OK, thanks…

…although, I do feel I should stick up for PPro here… I feel it is more than a “DV editor”. I’ve recently used it do quite a lot of uncompressed SD and some CFHD-compressed HD work.

    …anyway, back to the topic…

That MPEG Pro plug in does look interesting but I’d rather not fork out any more cash for plug-ins. Are there any other ways of importing DVD footage into PPro?

    Thanks,
    Jack

  • Incidentally, I’m trying to write a page about putting videos online in the Movie Making Manual wikibook. Please take a look and edit as necessary (it’s only a stub at present).

    Thanks a lot,
    Jack

Um… DVavi isn’t uncompressed! It’s compressed with the DV codec!

If your aim is to get an uncompressed AVI out of PPro then go to Export > Movie > Settings and set file type to “Microsoft AVI” and then, under video options, select “Compressor: none”.

If your aim is to get an uncompressed QT out of PPro then set file type to “QuickTime” and compressor to “TIFF”.

If your aim is to burn a DVD then you have three options:

    1) use PPro’s “Export to DVD” function

    2) or use Adobe Media Encoder (from within PPro) to export an MPEG-2 file and then use a DVD authoring program to burn this to a DVD

    3) or export uncompressed from PPro and use a DVD authoring program (like Encore) to compress the video for you.

    Hope this helps,
    Jack

    Great, thanks for the reply.

Does .rft support pictures? If I follow my proposed workflow (write my thesis in Word, export as .rtf, typeset in CS2) then will I have to keep my Word .rtf drafts as strictly text with no diagrams? Will I have to instert all my diagrams in CS2?

    Thanks,
    Jack

    Hi,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I think I will give InDesign CS2 a go. My plan at the moment is to write and draft the text in MS Word, export as an RTF and import this into InDesign for the layout. Does that sounds sensible?

    Thanks,
    Jack

Sorry… I forgot to mention… I’m running AE 6.5.1 Pro on Win XP on an Athlon 64 with 1GB of RAM.
