  • Stephen I looked up this Vegas proxy method, your right it does look easier, I tried it with a few AVCHD clips and sadly my computer still couldnt seem to handle it!

It was only if i set it to preview quality and it played fine, but for some reason it plays it in 4:3 instead of the orginal widescreen resolution and its squeezed inwards too, not cropped..

I fear this will hinder the editing process if I cant see it in its original aspect ratio, I think I will just stick with my old longer method for now until Its time to buy a new computer!

Thanks for showing me this anyway now I have something to look forward to!

  • Interesting.. I saw a guide on youtube a guy showed how to do this and he just made a crappy mpg version and the avchd version and just swapped the files after he was done editing smoothly with the crappy mpg ones because his system couldnt handle the avchd which is what I was doing just ONLY with me converting the avchd to mp4 instead of mpe2

But with what your saying it seems its different! ill check it out thank you so much!

  • Yeah really eh, you think you know just about everything there is to know and then I find this out!

I guess I do have A LOT to learn! thanks for your help guys!

  • Wow, thank you so much!

I looked up Proxy Files, and I have been doing my editing that way the entire time minus the fact that there converted to MP4 which you said was probably unnecessary work because the file doesnt really change!

But now I will try it going AVCHD to MP2 instead of MP4 now, that makes so much sense that it will work because my MXF files are mp2

On another note… My Canon XF150, does that mean its bad that its records in only MPE2 and not MP4? all this time I thought MP4 meant it was better overall

Anyway thanks for your help! you saved me hours worth of editing, for about 3 years now Ive been struggling editing my converted AVCHD files haha what a relief now! 🙂

  • Wow, I would never of have guessed that!

So all I should do is instead convert them to mpg2 instead of mp4 and it should work!

I cant beileve I didnt know this all these years!

Wow thank you! I had the disk but just assumed it would be easier to just grab them the old fashioned way off the card!

    Thanks! this works so well!

Im assuming you just select the clips you want and go

Edit -> Export to MXF correct? it seems like thats the way to do it is that how you do it for your camera?

I also noticed as well that it is MUCH MUCH faster using the Canon Utility in terms of writing the MXF files than it was from not using the program and highlighting all the footage from the card and dragging it into a folder on your computer, is this normal?

    Thanks a bunch

Thanks for the help John, but I think Im gonna let it slide with what I got, I ended up getting great quality (the quality that was my source video) by rendering Mainconcept MP4 with VBR of 45,000,000..

My computer cannot even handle the video obviously and its only 27 minutes 1280 X 720 with a huge file size of 6 and a half gigs.

My plan is to upload it to youtube in hopes it will keep the same quality, download it off youtube to get a smaller version of it with good quality or if that doesnt work then just compress it with Handbrake, that program seems to work well with squeezing things down with keeping quality! 😀

    Thanks for the help!

Rendered out at Max 20,000,000 and average 5,000,000 gave me the exact same pix elated results..

I would go back to Vegas 10 but I cannot because there is an out of synch issue on Vegas 10

I dont know why but I noticed throughout the video it would randomly get worse then go back up again almost as if the “Two pass” setting didnt work right and didnt give some scenes more pixels when it needed..

I am now trying VBR at MAX 20,000,000 and average 6,000,000

I dont understand the problem since mine is only 720P

Hmmm, I cant seem to use the Sony AVC encoder because it only gives me 29 frames persecond if its on 1920 X 1080 and my footage is 1280 X 720, also I cant find just a normal MP4 setting on the Sony AVC, it gives me Memory Stick ones, AVC or Bluray?

I Checked my settings on Vegas 10 and it was mainconcept and I made the settings the same on Vegas 12 and it still gives me the bad quality 🙁
