  • Thanks John, that’s great! Happy new year!

I had another thought about transcoding to ProResLT 720p… I’d love your feedback on it. Here is the post:

  • Hi,

    Thanks John.
    I’m not sure I understand though…

I’m not really so concerned with the footage that I did use in the final sequence, because I’ll media manage that and just keep it in ProRes. (Although it would be nice to be able to have a duplicate backup on another drive in a smaller codec (I was hoping AVCHD), but one that could be redigitized if something happened to the 1st backup)

But I’m more concerned about the media that was used in earlier cuts and assemblies, but didn’t make the final cut, and ends up offline. Sometimes down the line I want to look at an earlier cut, or make another version, or go back to an earlier version for another purpose, etc. This isn’t so much an issue for strictly business projects, since once its done its done, but applies more to narrative films…

    Thanks! Happy New Year!

PS I’m leaning now towards just getting an HPX170. Any rumors of P2 cards going down in price again or is it just wishful thinking?

Does the timecode sync up when you recapture/transfer the offline files as Prores?

  • So then the answer is that it doesn’t maintain timecode for any of those codecs?

If I’m going to have to pay another grand or more to buy a capture card for the HMC150, I may as well pay another grand to buy an HPX170 instead, right?

    Hi,

How does the Fujinon TH17x5BRM 17x lens compare with the 14x Canon lens? At B&H, the GYHM-700-U with only a 14x Canon lens costs a few hundred more than the GYHM-700-L17 with a 17x Fujinon lens.

Or is the HM700U different/better than the HM700L17 in other ways, besides the lens?

Charlie – Do you know the speed of the Fujinon lens offhand? B&H didn’t list it. I know the Canon lens is f1.6

    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.

Really the main thing I like about the GYHM700 is how it feels on your shoulder.

I’ve heard though, that when you transcode to Prores you lose 5 to 1 of the bit rate, so if you start with 25mbps, the prores file is only 6 or so. Is there any truth to this?

    Thanks

December 29, 2009 at 2:39 am in reply to: Quality of HVX / HPX in 24p vs HMC150 in 1080

    Hi Jeff

What do you mean by “Native frame rates” for the HPX? What does it mean if it’s not native (as is the case with the other 2 cameras?) ?

When you say that JVC 700 uses 1/3″ CCD’s, pixel shifted vs. native HD sensors…
that’s the same with the HPX and HMC150 right?

    Thanks again
    Isaac

    What about the GY-HM700U ?

With some sort of attachment, that can shoot in XDCamEX at 35mbps. Or is that bit rate also not comparable because its a different codec?

I posted this question somewhere else, but since you’re here : ) ….

How would you order these codecs in order of image quality, storage space aside, and all other things being equal:

    – XDCamEX – 35mbps
    – XDCamHD (same?)
    – HDV (mpeg2) – 25 mbps
    – AVCHD (mpeg4) – 24 mbps
    – DVCProHD – 35 mbps
    – Whatever codec JVC uses when recording to SD cards, when not using XDCam. HDV?

December 29, 2009 at 12:46 am in reply to: HMC 150 file transfer to Final Cut

    Isn’t the HMC150 also 1/3″ CCD, and not 1/2″?

Question about transcoding: I’ve read that the bit rate decreases from 24 mbps to 7 mbps when you transcode from AVCHD to ProRes. Is this true? And if it is true, does this result in loss of quality or are the numbers apples and oranges?

Another question – Lets say I transcode to Prores or to Cineform– and after completing the project I archive and backup the original small AVCHD and trash the larger unused Prores files…

If at a later point I want to reconnect to some of the offline (now trashed) prores clips, can I re-transcode the AVCHD clips to Prores, and will it have the same timecode and name as it had the first time around?

    Thanks!

    Isaac

P.S. I’m trying to decide between the HMC150 and the HPX170. Since there’s a $500 rebate on the HPX170 ending on Dec 31st, it ends up that the HPX170 +h 240 minutes-worth of P2 cards, will only be $2,170 more than the HMC150 with 240-minutes worth of SD cards.
