FCP Codec question

___________________________________________________________________I’ve discovered that I’ve been capturing from my avchd camera into Apple intermediate code (aic) which apparently is less good than capturing into prores 422…
Now am at a crossroads, I have about 200 clips downloaded into aic… wondering if I should keep using aic, or start using prores 422….
I have been scouring the net to no avail and can’t figure out if i could just go ahead with prores 422 and not have problems later combining both during the edit… any ideas?
My other concern is size, prores 422 and aic both create huge files, and because I have to travel with my hard drives space is always an issue… so while i have final cut 6, i’m wondering if its worth me actually buying final cut 7, in order to be able to edit prores proxy files…

I strongly suggest an offline/online mentality for AVCHD.
Here are the steps:
1. Copy all AVCHD folders to a drive
2. Import the AVCHD folder to log and transfer
3. Import as ProRes Proxy
4. Edit
5. Media Manage sequence as “make offline” with handles
6. Select all offline files in new sequence and batch capture (make sure you’ve loaded the needed AVCHD folders into log and transfer)
7. Transfer to ProRes SQ or HQ.This is a very slick workflow with FCP7.

Does the timecode sync up when you recapture/transfer the offline files as Prores?
