EX1 v 1.26 and EX3 v 1.16 were temporarily pulled from the site because of an issue with the installers. They will be re-posted shortly. In the meantime the support team is distributing the software and making sure people understand the correct upgrade path.

In the interim it is not recommended that EX customers in the US download/install firmware upgrades from non-US Sony sites (UK, Canada etc).

Will post an update once this is resolved.

Hi Rob,

Yes, the easiest way of doing this is to change the i.LINK mode to ‘FAM’ (File Access Mode). In this mode the deck mounts as a drive when connected via firewire. You need a driver on the Mac side and also the XDCAM Transfer or XDCAM Browser application to re-wrap the MXF files to MOV so that FCP can work with them. (There are also plugins from Sony and Calibrated Software that allow for direct import of XDCAM MXF.) The applications mentioned above work as FCP plugins and add ‘Import XDCAM’ selections to FCP’s File menu. The basic steps would be:

1) Install XDCAM Transfer and the FAM driver (they are bundled together but the driver can also be installed a la carte).

2) Connect the 1500 in File Access Mode. It will show up as a mounted drive on your Mac.

3) Launch FCP and select File–>Import–>Sony XDCAM. This will open the plugin browser.

4) After you make a few preliminary settings upon first launch (scratch location and cache location; can be any mounted drive), a browser window will open and automatically link to the XDCAM disc.

5) Highlight the files you want to import and click the IMPORT button in the bottom right corner of the transfer window. Files import as a background process and are directly linked to the currently open/selected project.

If you need to copy/image an XDCAM disc (before importing files, i.e. to back it up) to a local drive you can do this in a couple different ways. You can use Finder and copy just the /CLIP folder, which contains the full-resolution MXFs, or you can copy everything you see on the root level of the XDCAM disc. The latter also copies the proxy files (low res copies of the full-res clips) along with any EDLs or generic data that may be stored on the disc. If you’re not sure which you’d need, I’d recommend copying the entire disc.

Once this is done you can link to this disc image or CLIP folder in XDCAM Transfer by clicking the ‘add source’ button and browsing to it. Physical discs link up automatically; folders need to be manually linked.

There’s a bit more to it (logging and metadata, making sub clips if you need to) but those are the basic steps to import clips.

It’s working fine on my end and toggles more or less instantly when I press Cancel + SQ. If it’s not working you may want to try resetting the camera (remember to store your pic profiles first if you go this route).

You can go directly to 1.20, which is the latest. It’s a fairly simple procedure; basically you copy the firmware file to an SXS card and update from the camera menu (Others–>Version Up). It is safe and is meant to be performed by users/operators but if you’d prefer to send it in Sony will do it for you. If you’d like assistance upgrading it yourself you can call 800 883 6817 and someone from the support team will walk you through it. Note that this is a US toll free #.

If you look in the Logging area for the last clip and go down to the Subclips pane, is the master clip un-checked? Or can you not check this because of this other bizarre issue? Does Clip Browser recognize this clip properly? What if you were to use CB to make a new BPAV for just this file? Or if you were to copy this one .mp4 to a new folder and add that as a source in Transfer, then do an Import All?

I’m not entirely clear on this other symptom and it’s going to be hard to steer around it as if it were just some irrelevant anomaly.

what exactly is missing when, say, you import card ‘A’ and don’t get all your clips? if it’s a specific clip or specific clips, do the imports fail when you try to import just those files?

the 1.04/1.05 cutoff is only for the EX1, not the 1R, so she should be able to upgrade herself should she want to go that route.

unfortunately this can’t be done. you can only print out a list of master clips. as a workaround you may want to think about stretching out the logging area and doing a hi-res screen capture and then pasting that into a document. not very elegant, but it may get the job done.

It’s a fine (‘fine’ as in extremely granular) sensitivity offset for the ND filter positions. Is it having any effect? The manual says it’s not presently active. (It also says that about the 3d link setting but in that case it’s because an unreleased option is required). I’ll get back to you with some more info shortly. Don’t recall this in the beta we tested here, and it’s not very well documented.
