October 17, 2013 at 3:09 am in reply to: Media clips randomly turning black and disappearingI saw this bug on projects that had “TImecode Calculated at” 23.98 instead of 24.
I’m not sure if you can change that in v10, in v9 and below you have to create a new project and do a Color Trace. -
The part that I’m confused is where you say “transcoding the master file in AME “
Are you referring to Avid’s AMA?
If so, check your video is imported into the Avid as RGB instead of Rec709, that corrects the shift for me, or if it’s RGB change it to Rec709 -

October 4, 2013 at 5:07 pm in reply to: DaVinci 10 adds many prosumer oriented ‘all in one” features, while not fixing basic issues.[andrew smith] “hink we all have to keep in mind that the guys like CO3 also have Smoke/Flame etc. operators they work in tandem with – that seems to be forgotten a lot. ITS NOT JUST RESOLVE you are seeing on a lot of those Hollywood blockbuster films – they also work back and forth with vfx guys in house to get the best results.”
Very true, they all have VFX department making mattes for them. Still I believe that v10 is an amazing release, although I wouldn’t call the editor an NLE until they allow us to enter TC manually using a regular keyboard.
I think the OFX inclusion is an amazing step, and they did make power windows better, no more bezier hell. But I said this before, and it’s that I believe DaVinci Resolve’s point of existence right now is not to provide the best coloring tools, but to accommodate and sell BM hardware, the updates in v9 and v10 were geared towards the BM camera, editing, live mode, DIT tools, which is great, but you can tell that when they include Resolve for free with their cameras, so basically they’re saying that DPs can do their own color, so I guess colorist now must learn to become DPs as well?
So even though it’s a great tool, part of me agrees with Robert, the fact that Resolve used to be in the heavy iron category and now it’s been given away for free…well, doesn’t give me much confidence it is serving the colorist to be honest, as a matter of fact the color grading haven’t been updated much since they ever bought it, I think log mode is probably the only addition and I don’t know if that was accessible only from it’s own panel before.

(or free)?
We’re living in weird disruptive times…

September 18, 2013 at 8:15 pm in reply to: Apple’s aesthetic skills went off the railsYou have to go to that page and see it in your browser, it’s Windows. I guess if we have to move to Windows it won’t be that hard after all if this trend continues.
I remember reading the Steve Jobs biography, and there is a part at the end where Bill Gates says something like (paraphrasing) “At the end we were both Steve and I right, open model works and closed models also work, but only if Steve is at the helm”

September 18, 2013 at 7:55 pm in reply to: Apple’s aesthetic skills went off the railsI agree, it’s terrible. Is this Johnny Ive’s unapologetic design?
It was a mistake to put him in charge of IOS design in my opinion -
Hope so too, it almost look like they forgot to add that, I mean, it doesn’t make sense to try to add finishing editorial and cripple TC entry.
But regarding the DaVinci panels, how are they keeping up with all new additions done in Resolve? I hear complains that for example Lightbox is not accessible via the DaVinci panels, and I’m sure new additions won’t be mapped as well since it doesn’t seem a customizable panel.

[Josh Petok] “There is manual TC input in Resolve 10. It’s only available on the full Resolve panels”
Yes, that’s been known for a long time, however, since the announcement of V10 there were speculations as to wether that functionality will stop being exclusive of the $30K Resolve version, since it’s a hard to consider it as a NLE if it doesn’t allow you to enter timecode via regular input methods.

It’s really quite simple to use so don’t waste time looking for a tutorial, with the dirt removal button selected, just drag a rectangle around the area you want to clean. It only works on DPXs though, so you’ll have to convert the footage if it’s not. It you right-click in the button you have some extra settings. Also, the undo is different from the regular undo, I forgot the shortcut, but it’s listed in the pull down menu bar.

So how would you export for example a DM&E for a trailer you just cut, that’s a common deliverable? Or split audio?
