I love using windows as backlights and backgrounds if the view is pretty. I just light accordingly.

Just multiply 225 by 150 if you agreed to do them for so little. It’s not like your client will find a cheaper price.

Seems some reorganization was in order for em a few years ago. Neglecting to evolvewith the times will always mean closing doors at some point.
Any house still operating by their 80’s template is going to fold. It’s really that simple.

If you are having codec issues, ect, you can always throw the file into Sorenson Squeeze (or even after effects) and generate the file you need foryour project.

I think over and over you’ll the answer of Avid on this question.
I use FCP, Premiere, and Avid MC and hands down over and over Avid is quicker with editing. Now, importing big files and such will frustrate you in the Avid world because it makes new media files out of this footagerather thanjust importing a reference to the actual file like FCP does. Things like rendering disolves in FCP can make a day longer than it has to be though. The basic keystrokes and edit behavior is quicker in Avid as well. This part becomes subjecyive dpending on what NLE you as a user are fastest or most comfy with.
I mentioned Premiere. Man, it’s come a long way since it was the kid brother of NLEs. If you do a lot of AE work, you’ll love the gains had with dynamic linking. I can tell you our shop will most likely migrate toward Premiere soley within the next year. Avid is just not a company that wants to compete and Apple doesn’t see the value in FCP creating new mac users enough to keep creating them with it. Adobe is poised quite well to be the industry standard very soon.

Flat bids have been my saving grace as the tideas have changed. While folks use to stand in line to pay 450 an hour for cuts and disolves, charging a quarter of that an hour for anything they can dream up often runs em off today. That said, I know how long I’ll spend on a project. It’s just a matter of finding out their budget then explaining what I can do for that…. or letting them tell me exactly what they want and when they have to have it by and I can come back with one flat price for the whole enchelada. IMO, if a company can’t do that today, they are not competing like they can.

The truth is “they” CAN do it themselves today. Our job is to simply educate them on why and how our companies can benefit them more. That’s the bottom line… it’s not a come see ME business world anymore. It’s a here is how I can improve YOUR bottom line world.

  • You might save saome time by bringing in a proper edl from your old avid project.

  • You’ll always be fastest on what you are comfy with. For some that is Premiere, others love what Avid has to offer to make their day shorter. Doesn’t matter what you are cutting… the tools you select will relvove around your needs and budget.

  • What are the best ways to advertise? Where?
How should I structure my day?
Are there any tips I need to be thinking about now to save me a bunch of time in the edit?

Don’t advertise. Let your happy clients do that for you.

Structure your day in order of importance.

    Shoot it yourself.
