Thank you both for the info. I’m interested in seeing that film and perhaps trying the effect. What program would one use for animating the layers, After Effects of Final Cut Pro?

You’re right, its better to first fix color before adding the Broadcast Safe filter so everything goes through it in the right order. I’ll try out the RGB limiter next time. Thanks.

Hmmm maybe its possible that adjusting the white balance when I color correct causes some of the values to clip.

Or you can use a droplet for more control, to which you can add pretty much any function Photoshop will do. Before you create a Droplet, you need to record an action. Close the file, open the actions palette, make a new action, select it, press record and open your file, work on it and Photoshop records everything you do along with the parameters, then save your file and close it. Press stop recording, then select Create Droplet and use your action you recorded. Make sure you suppress opening and closing dialog boxes in the Create Droplet dialogue box. You then select the files or folder and drag it onto the Droplet icon in the Finder. I use this all the time for batch processing more complex edits other than resizing. Very very useful to understand if you work with a large number of files.

November 7, 2008 at 11:43 pm in reply to: how can I trace and edge and get a perfect line?If I understand you, you want a line with smooth curves around your graphic. Perhaps you could use the stroke style in the Layer Style box. Double click to the right of the layer icon in the layers palette to access that and you’ll find stroke style at the bottom. From there you can choose different blending methods.

Thank you everyone for the info. I’m going to call my insurance company and see what they offer and start from there.

Thank you! I will check both of those out. There are some Lynda tutorials included with the software but they don’t really cover all the basics. Anyways its something I’ll need to spend some time on in order to learn.

Thanks. What are the advantages or disadvantages of the flood or spotlight options, and the color temperatures? It should be able to fully illuminate a small critter/very small insect at night enough so the camera makes a clean picture, minimal grain. How does one hook this up to a battery?

This is all excellent advice. What is the best way to get experience with filmmaking for someone with almost no experience? Can I be a run-around on a set just to see how stuff gets done? This is something I’ll look into. I might not have experience but everybody has to start somewhere. What basic skills should I have if I was to assist? What can I learn on my own time to make myself valuable to a filmmaker? I will check postings for positions for this.
thanks,

Brendan,
Excellent advice! I’m still in the conceptual stage and things are still being fleshed out. Your points on the importance of good business sense are well-taken and I’ve read this other places. It wouldn’t be wise to expect to be a jack-of-all-trades. I was thinking more along the lines of freelance photography and not offering professional video services or web design since I really don’t have those skills. But I’m starting out really really small and just came here for some professional advice. Thanks again.
You’re also right about the educational aspect – all that software is no good if you don’t know how to extract its full potential. I intend to know what I’m doing so I’m planning on doing lots of reading and homework before I attempt anything so I can stay within my limitations. Like I mentioned in my first post, please let me know of any specific titles which you recommend.
I had not considered the economy, or taxes and contract law so this advice is also very useful. Its obvious there’s a lot to learn so for the time being I’m going to keep things very simple and go slow while I do my homework, if it doesn’t work out I will be happy to return to school.
Thanks!
