Thanks Chris. I got this figured out in the end. I set my HPG-20 to PAL, and used it to copy the clips down onto a freshly formatted P2 card.

Setting up for the shoot, under very rushed circumstances, I had caused problems by leaving some cards in the camera with NTSC footage on them.

Then had swapped the camera system over to PAL, and I THOUGHT I had chosen a freshly formatted P2 card on which to record the new PAL footage.

New rule : don’t leave partially recorded cards in the camera! I ended up with a card that had mixed PAL and NTSC clips on it – not a recipe for success.

It seems that this error should not have caused problems, but I suspect that it did.

Thanks Matthew. It sounds like I was right to be suspicious regarding the TYPE-S format for the client’s drive. So many variables to deal with these days!

I’ve since learned that the StarTech CardBus to ExpressCard Adapter should allow me to attach the P2 cards directly to the laptop. It will at least do for one shoot, especially with Shotput as the controlling software.

With this setup, I can check with the client whether the preferred format for their drive is DOS or MAC, format accordingly, and being the transfer process.

Shane, this issue of being formatted by the HPG-20 – according to the user manual, the client’s drive ends up being ‘S-FORMAT’.

Will this be recognized as a workable drive/volume outside of this connection – eg : when the drive is taken off to the client’s edit room?

    Shane,

This is great, thank you. I’ve already been on Imagine Products website, and gathered information.

I don’t have a dedicated P2 card reader – do you by chance know if the HPG-20 will work in this role? I suspect that it would.

June 11, 2010 at 3:08 am in reply to: P2 720p60 import to FCP 5.1.4

    Thanks John… very helpful.

I downloaded and ran the AJA test, but I have not been able to find any interpretation of the results(?). For Disk Read/Write, frame size DVCProHD 720p60, file size 512 MB, I got Write @ 19.7 MB/s, and Read @ 12.3 MB/s.

I found the G-RAID drive to be aprox 2/3 full, so am laying off video overnight, and will try import again tomorrow.

Monitoring of video is just happening within FCP’s standard edit windows, meaning there really isn’t monitoring during the ingest process. Should this change?

By the way, for my purposes, this project would be just fine if edited in SD, but I haven’t yet seen any way to downconvert as you conduct an import-type function into FCP (in P2, I have the HPX-500P and HPG-20). It would seem that FireWire, for all it’s convenience, is not a system that will allow for changes like this.

May 14, 2010 at 11:57 am in reply to: HPG20 as an SD device?

Thanks again Noah. It’s quite possible that all the information I need on this is located right here in my office. I keep coming back to the idea that we’re way past ‘the old days’ of using one or 2 pieces of analogue gear, knowing them in detail and being able to really work them to their potential.

I still struggle to navigate the new terrain!

And now back to a FCP ‘refresher’ in anticipation of a Saturday edit.

Excellent Jan, thank you – and update now complete (I went out and added a dedicated card reader).

This process creates a follow on question – on the HPX-500, at the end of the updating process, the last line of the message says ‘Make new upgrade SD for another version upgrade’

I THINK this means that future firmware upgrades will require a freshly formatted and prepared SD card. Is that your understanding? I found the message to be somewhat ambiguous. I couldn’t help wondering if there is another round of updates to be done as part of this current cycle…

Yes, Noah, it does have the SD slot. I have it loaded now. It sits right above the 2 P2 slots.

Thanks Michael. Ahem, not to sound too dumb, but I’m searching on ‘DVDSP’… er, is this software?
