Decklink cards also do the scaling of DVCproHD and HDV, indeed, they’d not work right if they did not do so. To call this “accelleration” is misleading…..

The workflow all depends on a few things:

a) did you shoot 24pA or 24p?
b) do you want to be on a 24p timeline, or a 29.97fps normal NTSC timeline,
c) do you want your 60i footage to look like 24p or not.

If you want 60i to look like 24p, you can do so, and you can either use my Standards Converter if you want to edit on a 23.98fps timeline or Film Effects if you want to edit on a 29.97fps timeline.

If you shot 24p Normal, you can edit on a normal NTSC timeline and use Film Effects to make your 60i look like 24p, or not – they’ll both edit on that timeline fine.

If you want a 23.98fps timeline, or have shot 24pA so need to remove the pulldown, you must use something like my standards converter to make your 60i to 24p or else FCP will do a really bad job of it.

Cutting 24p at 24p is also important to maintain constant cadence, which is a pre-requisite for some broadcasters…. Also, for web or DVD. I see more reasons to cut 24p at 24p than at 29.97fps.

You can use my Standards Converter to add 3:2 pulldown as a render process, which should help, as I guess the G4 is of a minimum spec for realtime addition of pulldown.

Decklink products are great. No problems there. Running ProHD + HDlink. Cheap too.

Betacam doesn’t have pixels as such, as it’s analogue format, but is normally captured to as, and recorded back as 486 lines. D9 is 720×480, like DV, DV50 (which is what compression it uses, if I remember rightly) so will not record those 6 lines.

Yes, there’s a balance. The Alchemist will probably do the video sections a little better, but re-doing the graphics in PAL will give you both a resolution and quality advantage that the alchemist conversion won’t give you. As your project is mostly graphics, I’d go the “home” conversion route, if you like the look of your video converted with the free demo of the standards conversion.
