Yes, anamorphic video, whether from a lens or sensor that’s 16:9 work great with Film Effects. You can get some very filmic results that way….

If only that really were the case…. You certainly don’t get full resolution or total lack of jaggies via this method.

Too complex to answer without knowing the full details of the project. For instance, is it drama, documentary or music video? Shot progressive PAL or interlaced?

Not in this particular case….
Use Cinema Tools to “conform” the 23.98fps to 25fps, scale up the video in FCP in a PAL timeline and then make the PAL DVD from that.

SDI out of a decklink or Kona? I know both do strange things to DVCProHD which a deck doesn’t, so it could be something similar? Must admit I’ve not seen issues on uncompressed here, and yes, 10bit is totally buggy – you never quite know what it’s going to do 🙂

Joe, are you finding scaling issues in FCP5? I thought the filtering in that was quite nice.
Issues with reds are codec related, I’d think. The apps you talk about are all RGB, which means they’d have to translate to get out to video. FCP for the most part works in Y’CbCr space. Actually, the codecs in FCP are not bad – they just look it, but when played back from tape they tend to be great. FCP just doesn’t do filtering for playback on the computer.

30p on your camera is probably very similar in resolution to 60i, perhaps lower. It’s not true progressive, and the filter that reduces the resolution of interlaced video is most probably still present in 30p mode.
So, 24p from a conversion filter should be very close in quality to what you’d expect from 30p, if you shoot 60i. Converting from your 30f will not produce best results – but the proof is in the pudding – best try the demo and see how you get on.
