  • I’m with Duke…importing is pretty much instantaneous. Its not creating new media, you are simply telling Resolve where the clips are. From there, select the clips and create your optimized media….then wait.

I believe there are still issues syncing audio in Resolve, and then trying to get a list to show the original wave file name when sent back to the sound house. Avid will not give you an issue here.

I guess the question then becomes …what formats can your tv play, and do those formats support 6 audio channels.

    Guessing a basic mp4?

  • I have a pretty beefy system, and never use optimized media or render cache. I work at HD, then switch to 4K (if required) for mastering.

  • You should see In the media pool that your clip is still at it’s native resolution.
You should also see in your project preset that your timeline is set to 1920×1080.

(as long as your frame rate is correct) you should be able to change your timeline to what ever you want…when ever you want. Quite often I will stay in HD until I go to output…then switch to 4k, if required.

As Tero suggested, some basic manual browsing is always suggested for people learning Resolve.

Bit late to the party, and curious to know how your system worked. Did anyone contribute to your costs?

Trying to pick and pull all the good bits would take me hours and would end up with probably at least 1/3 of the video still needing to be stored to cover all the kids

That is kinda the point. You are talking about 30 games, and using your math, 8 to 10 TBs of storage…why wouldn’t you want to reduce this by 2/3rds?

As well, speaking as someone who did this for my kids hockey teams for years…it is much easier to clip up the games immediately after they are done, while it is still fresh in your mind, then it is to go through 30 games at the end of the season. I would subclip the items based on the kids name and number, and then when the year was done, I would have everything ready to go.

As for 1 hour cinema DNG being smaller than DNX…There are a lot of compressed versions of the raw cinema DNG, and the numbers change quite a bit…but I’m not sure about 100 gigs for an hour…seems a bit small. I’ve seen numbers closer to 480 gigs, but I’m not sure what compression they were using, or frame rate.

As much as a LUT is calling up particular settings, you have no control over them, so you can’t really see what is going on behind the curtain.

I think the issue is going to be your playback device.

I used to find encoding a DVD with proper 5.1 surround was the only way to go.

Now I can use 6 channel playback from Avid or Resolve, going through BM hardware, and then an SDI to HDMI converter, and then to the Amplifier and TV, but you need an amplifier that will accept that signal…they don’t all work that way. If memory serves, it has to pass through AAC audio or PCM audio or something like that.

I do always have to swap the center and LFE channels out of both Avid and Resolve, which I think might be a issue in the BM hardware.

What are you thinking your playback device would be?…how does it feed the TV?

Telestream Switch might be able to playback anything with 6 channels, through BM hardware to the TV. Pretty sure I’ve done that as well, but because of the channel swapping, I usually just use Avid or Resolve.
