When I call avid.com I usually go straight to the licensing issues, option. I don’t think I’ve ever been asked for a system ID on the phone, and have certainly never paid a one time fee. Is that new, or are you taking the hard approach to getting in touch with Avid?

I have not used the new version being offered by red giant, but I have used the old version offered by automatic duck, and I always had trouble getting it to copy all the media across. After several tries, I gave up and started my individual folders for projects workflow that I use to this day.

My last attempt was probably 3 or 4 years ago, before anything other than Avid was being used to create media. I was on Avid 5.5 at the time. I would guess 90 percent of the media I was trying to copy came off tape, and was digitized into the box from a deck. After the copy process was done, I would hide my original mxf folders, and have Avid use the media created by the duck. My sequence always had media offline issues.

The old Media Mover program from many years ago seemed rock solid. Not sure if it is still around or not.

go to your avid mediafiles folder and drag the mdb file to a bin in avid. Your media will appear.

If your folder doesn’t have an mdb file, make sure it only has numbers in the folder name. This will cause avid to rebuild the database.

I’m a bit confused.

Are you saying that the timeline has been relinked to higher quality, the effect icons are still inside those nests on the timeline,

and you can actually call up the properties of those effects with the effect editor and use them on another clip (or the original clip),

I’m on the windows platform, but I’m not sure if the export options are much different.

Jpeg 2000 has been around for quite a while I think.

DPX is an option under AMA File Export, as is mxf op1a

And under output we still have XDCam and P2.

Of all this, I think dpx is the only new item. Versions get a bit muddy after a while.

I am also able to ama link to a stills dpx sequence, which for some reason I think may be new. I thought AMA wouldn’t do file sequences?

Remember, you can always try the trial to see if your workflows will work.

Where did your media come from? (how was it created?)
what happens if you drag the mdb file into in open bin?

If Avid is recreating the mdb file each time, then that tells you that the process is trying to work. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that error window.

Is it possible to try on another hard drive? Perhaps you have some read/write restrictions on that drive.

I’m actually surprised Sorenson keeps the original files timecode.

If you don’t want to use Avid, try Resolve. You can tell it to add a prefix or suffix to the files you create, so you may be able to match the originals.

The free version should do everything you need for transcodes, and it is quite fast.

Make sure you set up your preferences to include your reel id information. (just do 1 clip and look at it in resolve to make sure you are getting the information you need back in Avid

There are other relinking options within MC that might help you out.

When you select a batch of clips in a bin and try to relink it to a specific sequence, you can select other information inside the bin to use to help find your clips. If you create a sequence of a bins clips- 115 version, and try to relink it to a bin of 36 media, you can select items such as matching masterclip duration or matching master clip end might work. (How many clips in your bin have the exact same duration…down to the frame?) I wouldn’t try to relink 2000 clips at once like this, but bin by bin might work for you.

Doesn’t sound like fun, but you could copy all the original names to a new column, and manually remove the extra letters from the name. They relink according to that bin…like i said, not fun, but feasible.

You are worried about babysitting your new transcodes, but your babysitting time might double or triple that of trying to get the relink to work. Setting your transcodes to go in smaller batches might just save you a lot of time in the end.

I haven’t done this for several months, but the last time i did it, i was going between my office box (HPZ820) and my laptop ZBook 15 inch. Both will run resolve as stand alone boxes without issue.

I used chrome remote desktop to remote into the office computer, and launched resolve, telling it to connect to my laptop through the remote session dialogue. I received no errors about cuda or anything like that.

The reason i switched to Chrome remote desktop years ago was i found the other vpn programs weren’t always compatible with the edit programs i was using. Avid media composer would usually complain that i changed my resolution and shut down. Avid DS would lose the license to its plugins, which would ruin my renders. Chrome Remote Desktop just seems to work. I use it all the time.
