Tim, yes I agree that it is probably the source footage. It’s DV, and was shot in a hurry for a previz, so lots of blown out highlights and crushed blacks.
The artifacts show particularly badly in the black areas. I have thought it might be the source footage. My main concern is that the problem might rear it’s
ugly head during a more critical encode, so thought I would ask for some hints.
Vincent, yep the highlights are definitely really overblown! Thanks for the tip on CBR. I thought VBR produced a better result regardless of video length, but now
that I have had more time to think I realized that the reason we use VBR is to maximize the quality of longer form projects!
I thought it also might be useful to post a frame-grab of the errant video. Is there a way to do this?
