    Thanks, Al.

Your experience confirms what I was hearing from folks I know.

FYI, I went ahead with purchase of a refurbished MBP 15″ with 17 chip, 16 gb RAM and a 1 tb SSD. The 32 gb version was tempting but out of my price range.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks, Oliver.

Well, the 1TB refurbished is already gone. And it looks as if all new MB Pros don’t allow RAM upgrades. Only the i9 chip allows 32GB RAM and would need to be purchased that way, since RAM is soldered in place.

No, I too would never place media for editing on my OS computer.

I haven’t done it but I’m guessing it’s possible to place large files like photos and documents on an external drive. It feel liked I’d have a lot of work selectively transferring files back to a new SSD from my old 1TB HDD, but I’m told Carbon Copy Cloner is useful for that task.

And thanks for the heads up about connectors. Will work that into my budget (which is already exploded).

    Thanks, Mark. All good points.

No, I don’t generally need to hide my camera, though my GoPro does work that way. I like that I don’t look like I’m making a film when shooting with an iphone (unless of course I rig it with lots of gear) but even more important is that I always have my iphone with me.

I haven’t fully researched it but I’ve seen—somewhere—pocket drives that allow offloading an iphone. The heat problem I didn’t know about. And then there’s the problem of color grading and correction.

    Thanks again.

    Thanks. I’ll do that.

A related problem is that when I moved libraries into a dropbox folder I later found that they had returned to the Movies folder. How can I move them to dropbox? Or can I?

    Thanks, everyone, for the info.

I’m still learning FCPX, so when I went to move my libraries to dropbox and my media to an external drive I was surprised to see that the first library I was moving was 9GB. I’d thought that the library would be a more manageable size so I could routinely leave all libraries on dropbox as you suggested, but my broadband won’t handle all that traffic.

Then I tried Media/Consolidate and that seemed to fix the problem of too big a library.

But I’ surprised that an otherwise small project I’ve used for learning has a library that is 1.1 GB. Why would it be that large if all original and optimized media are on my external drive?

    Thanks Mathew,

Yes. I’m pleased to my instincts are shared by others.

And I agree with your compromise: original camera for field work, newer camera for interviews. I’ve done that in the past and it’s a good solution. But in this case I’ve shot both with the same camera, and I’m five years into the project, so it’ll be the HVX all the way.

Thanks for your thoughts, Reid, but of course I can’t change what I’ve already shot in the last five years, whatever Netflix or others demand.

I’d pretty much made up my mind before posting, but I’m still interested in how others have coped with what must be a common problem. WIth new cameras looking so good I’ve been tempted to upgrade for any new footage, as I said, but I think on reflection the change midstream would overshadow the beauty of the new images. Audiences do notice differences and it confuses them, unless there’s a clear logic to the difference.

I’m not sure what the function of your Skype footage was but archival footage in a documentary can be in almost any format as long as the audience gets the context: home movies, newsreels, TV. My question was only about the primary story.

    Thanks again.

My thoughts exactly. Just thought I’d see what others have done. Cheaper too.

    Thanks

No. I think it looks pretty good. I’m simply concerned about the current standard audiences are getting accustomed to.

    Thanks, Shane.

Yes, it plays back normally in VLC.

Now I’ve got to figure out what’s going on with QT.

    Thanks again. Very helpful.
