    Steve–

I am using the CS6 suite; my client is using FCP v6. I have a colleague who’s using FCP v10.

    What I’ve done is this:

    1) Export an uncompressed AVI from Flash CS6
    2) Create a new comp in AE CS6 (1920×1080; DVCPRO HD 1080 preset)
    3) Export to QT, DVCPRO HD 1080p30
    4) Import to FCP

What I see in FCP is my clip, but I have black borders all the way around.

Do you see anything I’m missing?

    Steve–

I have used this, but it only exports to 1440×1080 when my source and final size should be 1920×1080.

I could buy the codec, but prefer a free alternative.

Is there really no codec with QT for Windows and Mac that’s really lossless and can be used in FCP?

    Wow..great information here. Thanks.

Bottom line is I need to give my client a clean video he can use in Final Cut Pro.

I’m not able to export a QT movie with h264 from Flash for a couple of reasons:

    – Audio is seriously out of sync
    – I’m told FCP doesn’t work with h264; the video I give my client looks fine in QT, but jaggy in FCP

Because Flash has limited export options, I’ve been trying to export to an uncompressed AVI then encoding to h264. The audio syncs much better this way, but then I learned FCP doesn’t like h264.

My client suggested DVCHD Pro because he’s shooting with Panasonic HD cams that use this. I’m sure he could be convinced to use another codec for my animations as long as it’s clean and free and works with Final Cut.

That’s interesting. I understood this to not be the case, but it does make sense and definitely worth a try.

For the record, I’m exporting an uncompressed AVI from Flash and have tried all kinds of encoders to convert to QT — everything, it seems, except Adobe standalone encoder. Makes me wonder if it’s really any different from AE. When I do convert, I end up with a ~96mb file for 6 seconds. The AVI is 1.2gb.

Thanks for all the input. I’m going to ask my client to try the QT I created to see how it looks on that end.

Hm…doesn’t seem to matter anyway. It scrubs fine in the timeline, but when I render it out, some of the numbers stick for a while then spin some more.

Is the Offset effect really hosed or could this be something else?

    Thanks for replies!

Not sure what happened exactly, but I was able to offset to about -50000 over 20 frames then on the next frame reset it and do the same for the next 20 frames. The first time I tried this it hiccuped, but the second it worked fine so your guess is as good as mine. Maybe I had two frames instead of one before the reset.

Anyway, I applied a directional blur to the numbers on the right, more blur farther to the right. And it works well enough.

The explosion? Uh…probably shake it a little then overlay some Particular smoke. Nothing fancy.

This is a freebie project and I was given 3 days. It’s only internal so it can lack some polish.

Thank you, Todd. That’s a great resource.

I appreciate all the feedback and hope I’m not sounding snarky–I am really just trying to understand the best and most efficient ways of animating with After Effects. It is a very different animal from the Flash I’m used to, but I know AE is a great tool.

    Thanks for the reply, Dave.

I totally get Flash and AE are different environments and require different tools. Still, keyframing in AE seems unnecessarily tedious to me–mostly why I code all my animations in Flash–they’re just easier to change. I’m really just wondering if keframing is the only/best approach to animating in AE.

I’ll have a look at aenhancers, too. Thanks for the pointer.
