February 26, 2014 at 4:19 pm in reply to: Imac chokes when preview rendering fast color corrector in premiere pro cc.I have a Mac Pro with a quad core 2.8, 8 GB of Ram and an GeForce 680 with 2GB of video ram and I get the same thing. Makes colour correction a pain doesn’t it?

This is exactly the tool I’ve been looking for. Colourista is great for a lot of things but this targets my concerns precisely. Thanks a bunch. I’ve never seen this product before. Gerry in Calgary.

I use an adapter for the Canon lenses. I have a collection of great Canon glass. To get a better image I used one of the basic scene files that seemed close to what I needed, then I tweaked it. Glass is very important.

My bread and butter is live theatre and dance. I used VX2000s until it wore out, then I switched to the Sony FX1000s. They use the same chips and lenses as most of the 1/3 inch chip Sonys. I get great results. I added Ninjas a couple of years ago and that has improved the quality slightly and vastly improved the workflow. The FX1000s and cameras from this family are very easy to operate and get reliable results. They also get great battery life and you can use your old Sony batteries. February 25, 2013 at 5:15 pm in reply to: Can anyone recommend a cheap solution for Wireless Live Video Feed for our JVC GY-HD 100 cameras?I’m always cautious about “cheap” wireless, even expensive wireless. Feature films use very expensive wireless and they still back them up with wired mics. Wireless is never foolproof no matter what you spend; however, My son is a independent film maker and has used the Sony UWP-V1 Wireless Lavalier Microphone Package on two feature-length films without a problem. He also has been very happy with the quality. If I needed a wireless mic, it would be the one I’d try but I’d still back it up with a wired mic for safety, but it depends on the type of work you are doing.

While recording a school performance, I had a parent block a camera by holding up an iPad to record the event. Yes, there are lots of inconsiderate people in the audiences of events and some people have made some good suggestions on how to deal with them.
I have a related issue, what about photographers and videographers who intrude on events? I see this very commonly and I get a little embarrassed for my profession. I do know; however, there are some brides who actually demand this kind of thing, they think the “movie” is more important than the event. When I shoot weddings, I don’t make movies, I capture what I see with technical prowess (I like to think) with the best that the circumstance allow me without intruding on the event. There are lots of other people who push the boundaries and create some really exciting original work. I tend to be conservative, I don’t want to draw attention to the technique.

I haven’t had my AF100 very long but yesterday I went out to test that very thing. I was shooting geese on snow in bright sunlight. I had to use my darkest ND filter. When I checked it out on the computer,I was really impressed how it handled the details in the bright snow. The geese themselves were properly exposed. I primarily shoot live theatre and dance so this is not a definitive test. In a wedding as in live theatre, you get these localized hot spots that will blow out if you expose for everything important. I tend to shoot a little darker than I think is perfect then in post I might tweak it a bit. Before I bought the camera I was a little concerned because of the things that were said in some of the Philip Bloom tests. But I’m confident now that I won’t have a problem.

I convert to Pro Res LT and edit on Premiere Pro. I don’t know how well this would work on your system.

Okay, everybody’s work flow is different, so my solution may not work for you. I shoot multi-cam with three cameras. The AF100 is one of these. The other two use Ninjas so the files coming out of them are Pro Res. When I put the SD card from the AF100 into the computer I import the files directly into Premiere Pro 6 from the card reader. There I fine tune the white balance and exposure and then I encode it to Pro Res and stick it onto my raid for editing. Basically I do the same with the Ninja footage. I tweak the white balance and exposure then encode in again to Pro Res and transfer it to the appropriate folder on my raid for editing.
I do agree that the file system on the Panasonic is a pain.
Next year I intend to put a Samurai on the AF100.

February 25, 2013 at 4:03 pm in reply to: Panasonic launches AG-AF105A with 10-bit SDI outI bought one from B & H. I can’t believe they ever shipped this without expanded focus. I use it all the time because I use Canon zoom lenses which aren’t parafocal, so I can’t do the old trick of zoom in, focus and reframe (at least reliably). I love this camera.
