Thanks Brad, great tip!
I do use a designated workspace for color grading, but if I change anything in the timeline FCPX changes the position of the scopes once again and I manually have to put them in the order I want to have them. I think it is a bug which is in there for a long time now…

Sorry to bring this old topic back to life, but I do have the same problem and can´t fix it. I´m on 10.4.8

Yes, unfortunately this happens with all the footage – no matter what I use. It seems to be completely independent from the footage I´m using.

Thanks for your tips re troubleshooting:

here is what I tried already:

I have tried the following so far:

– trashed preferences
– re-installed FCPX
– clean install of the OS (10.8.2) on a fresh HD with fresh install of FCPX (no other programs on the system)
– changed RAM
– Hardware Test with no issues showing
– Cuda driver installed and Cuda uninstalled
– tried with other graphics card 8800 GT

No luck so far

I think my system has some kind of a problem – whatever this could be… 🙁
I wanted to try a proxy workflow today with my old 8800GT card (its on the list of approved cards).
I tried on a fresh install of the OS and FCPX. I only used one 4 minute ProRes SD clip and transcoded it to proxy inside FCPX and tried to play it back in the timeline in proxy resolution.

It played fine for about 2,5 minutes when the freeze once again occured. It lasted for about 20 seconds where I could do nothing. The audio was playing along again.

So I guess I can rule out the graphics card… and I doubt that the 5770 would solve the problem…

I ran hardware test again which checked out with no error…

Everything on my Mac runs like it should. Premiere, FCP 7 and anything else has no trouble at all.

I´m at my wits end – looks like I will quit using FCPX for as long as I do not have another machine or use it only on my MBP…

When I import this file into FCPX the playback is skipping frames and its giving me interlace problems. It looks very stuttery. Tried on 4 different FCPX systems – looks the same. No problem with AVID and Premiere. The TV station also has no problem with it. Not sure if you can see it that easily in the viewer, but its clearly visible when monitored on a broadcast monitor through my Matrox MXO2 LE.

This thing really keeps me puzzled.
I did a few more tests with my wifes new Imac. It has no i/O card connected. The clip plays fine in the viewer there.
On my system with the Matrox card connected I can no longer see the problem in the viewer as well – but its still visible on the broadcast monitor.
So I played around with the field order of the clip inside FCPX. I changed it to “upper field” and of course the typical problems of a wrong field order showed up on the monitor. When I changed it back to “lower (even) fields” though the clip was suddenly displayed correctly and without issues!
I tried to replicate it with another clip which gave me troubles before and changed the field order in the information window back and forth and it now also displays correctly.
Looks like there must be a problem with the I/O driver inside FCPX or something. With this workaround I can at least show it to the client correctly inside FCPX without having to open it in another NLE…

All PAL SD I’ve worked with is lower.
Is there something with FCP X I’m not understanding?

DV PAL is lower. For some mind-boggling reason D1 PAL is upper.

My guess would be that if it was just underpowered it would just drop some frames?
As described I can edit pretty well and it feels snappy during edit. Its “only” the playback thats causing me lots of trouble and grief 🙁
But its good to know that a 570 could solve my problem!
