Hmm, ya, looks like Newton would be the way to go of the three. I can see how the joints feature could potentially work.
I’m familiar with elastic connection and ease and whizz, but those are still pretty manual approaches and not quite what I’m looking for. I’ve mainly seen this effect done with text so I’m thinking it lives as a text preset.
I may try my hand at creating some custom expressions for the position and rotation based on layer index and time offsets with some slider controls for fine tuning. I know it’s feasible, but I’m probably biting off a little more than I can chew. But this is why I’m pretty sure someone else has made it a preset. If by some chance they haven’t, or I just can’t find it, and I manage to make it work, I’ll do my best to package it as a preset for anyone who wants it.
Anyway, thanks for the response. I’m going to look more into Newton regardless.

Go to preferences>audio hardware and make sure that you have the right device for playback.
Built in output is likely what you want if you’re playing through your comp speakers or through speakers that are plugged into the onboard audio port.

January 13, 2014 at 3:12 pm in reply to: 3d camera tracker says “analysis solved failed”? every time!So it will be a pain, but it’s probably still possible.
Break your clip into 1 second (or so) chunks. Analyze each section and see which ones fail. If it is only one of them, great! Basically, you may have to manually do the sections that fail.
My guess is that since it’s a video game, you’re constantly turning so the points the system is trying to track disappear out of the frame.
Another way would be to let each one second clip handle itself (because it’s possible none of them will fail since they’re shorter) then place each one in a new sequence. You can them play them back to back. But, you’ll probably have to attach them to a null object and manually place each one so that it lines up with the last. Because of that, I would suggest that if you’re working in 1080p to make your final comp 720

I don’t think so, but I’ve just read this is a common feature request they may be tackling soon.

Time remap tends to mess with me personally.
I think you should just animate the wing going up and down one time and use the pingpong loop expression. It will repeat over and over forever (unless you tell it otherwise) and you won’t have to mess with keyframes.

January 10, 2014 at 3:42 am in reply to: How to create multi-colored energy/cartoon waves (bands) emanating from a person’s sillhouette??Ya, so a lot of that is done by hand.
One of the easy ones to achieve would be the one in which it takes his outline and blasts it outwards.
Since you already have your footage keyed, you could use the autotrace and create a stroke around that path. Then just scale it up until it leaves the frame.

Thanks Todd.
I suspected that was the case.
With the exception of this issue, I love 12.2! Some really simple but useful updates.
Feature request: Shape repeater range selector. I know, I know, I should submit it to you guys formally.
Right now I use a combination of the shape repeater baker script and the explode shape layers script for more control and quick access to that kind of thing, but I’d love a range selector for less complicated endeavors.

January 9, 2014 at 8:12 pm in reply to: This is the best value for money Mac Pro configuration. So you’re going to spend another $3-5k minimum for the new machine?
It’s about value, right? So you should look at it from the standpoint of what am I going to spend on computers in the next 5-10 years, not how does after effects perform at its current state on this hardware. I certainly understand your evaluation, and think it’s awesome that you took the time to do it, but from a budgetary standpoint, that’s how I think about it.
I think what apple has done is created the new format for the computer. I expect this model to have an unprecedented shelf life. Any new mac will only have minor improvements that don’t justify an upgrade. I’m saying buy this now, and don’t buy another computer for 5-10 years (okay maybe 10 is long, but you get the point).
Personally, I’m waiting until the next generation to buy (not out of choice, but from a pure budget standpoint). But, if I were in need of a new computer and had the money for it now, that’s how I would go about it.

January 9, 2014 at 7:52 pm in reply to: This is the best value for money Mac Pro configuration. Here’s where I disagree:
Get the maximum amount of cores. Sure, maybe you don’t see much a benefit NOW, but AE will advance as computers do. It’s easy to add ram and storage (and maybe even change your graphics card? https://www.macrumors.com/2013/10/25/graphics-cards-in-new-mac-pro-may-be-user-replaceable/) which will only get cheaper in time, but you need a new computer for more cores. You’re playing the short game right now, I would try to future proof if you really want to save money. Start with the best brain, then build your components up as you need them.
Also, is it really only for AE? Did you include the usage of C4D lite in your tests? That could make a difference. Processing power in the gpu is becoming increasingly important.

January 8, 2014 at 6:30 pm in reply to: Copy / Paste material from one project to anotherThere’s a really handy way to do this with this script:
https://aescripts.com/save-comp-as-project/
As the name suggests, you can save a composition as a project. Now you can just import that project into your new project and the composition will be exactly as it was in the other.
***BEWARE THOUGH – do not put a / in your comp name or else it will overwrite your entire original project file. I had this problem before, it sucked. It’s a great script though, I’ve just started duplicating the project I want to pull assets out of before running it in case I come across any other oddities like that (always good to have your backup)
