I have been using Mercalli for last few years. I find it amazingly good at what it does. Currently using version 3 of it. I just got an email from Prodad a few days ago which said v4 is coming…

”Never successfully used the warp stabiliser yet becasue just got CC2014 recently and when I tried it on old projects which I had successfully stabilised with Mercalli I just got all sorts of errors about can’t stabilise if clip is not same res as timeline or can’t stabilise because I had some other effect on it so it seems to be a lot more limiiting than Mercalli plugin….

If windows media player can decode frames from WMVHD in less than 1/25 second then Premiere can do it too. Once the frame is decoded it is sent to the compressor to re-encode to whatever output format is needed. It should NOT matter what the input format is because decoders are designed to decode FAST. The only thing that should take time is the ENCODER ie. the MPEG4 output in this case. You are saying that the input format is slowing down the encode at output stage. If this is the case then the Media Encoder is a very badly designed/optimised program…
…and anyway it doesn’t happen the other way around does it. ie. i edit AVCHD files (which are way more compressed delivery format) and output to WMVHD….

The reason I was commenting about the price of a dual-Xeon setup was because I got the impression from the posts I read that people here that were asking about their CS4 experience being not usable with HD footage with using extremely old, cheap, computer hardware, pentiums, DDR2 and the like, and I thought you were advising them to get dual-Xeon setup. From what I could see these people wouldn’t even dream of buying a single Core i7 machine because of cost never mind a dual-Xeon setup which is at least 3x the cost again…
My machine is fairly high end for consumer setup and I can edit AVCHD footage natively fairly well (there is slight lag and occasionaly chugging on the previews/monitor windows), but i have never tried multiple layers etc. or any fancy stuff. Years ago I previously edited DV footage from Canon XL1S on an old Dell Pentium 4 machine and that was just capable of doing that. Now my current machine could process DV in it’s sleep! But AVCHD and othe MPEG4 formats are another story. As you say the CODECS seems to be always pushing current generation hardware at near their full capacity – and rightly so, if they weren’t then the codec designers didn’t do their job! By multi-processor I assume you mean a dual socket motherboard such as SR-2 running two Intel Xeon processors… ie. a server configuration… you do realise how much this kind of setup costs? Considering each 6-core Xeon is about 2k!! Could be about 4-5k for this configuration…
