Give a couple of local crewing agencies, full production shops, or gear hire houses a call.

Ask them roughly what they would charge you as a Prod for a day or half day cam op + HD kit.

You’ll get the local picture quickly, and be able to specify the kind of job you are talking about.

They might tell you to get stuffed, but if you have a go at a few you’ll get what you need.

The only thing we can be certain of is change…..

Was it one of you guys that I stole that one off of? Anyway, that what’s forcing my planning into a more “Ali” style – stay on those toes and happy to keep dancing.

Repeats of what has gone before, but mine:-

First in – last to leave.

Food is the key to keeping on schedule/on quality.

Record everything about the project, and keep at least two copies.

    Thanks

July 14, 2009 at 1:38 am in reply to: wanna participate in my next documentary?

Mark’s 1st paragraph reminded me of a great period of work.

For the best part of 5 years the majority of my work time was spent interviewing experts and veterans of WW2.

Old boys that you pass on the street, totally unaware that they have these intense and moving stories just a scratch under the surface – did maybe a 100 of them, hard to count it all up, but if you watched any of those WW2 doco on Discovery/History channel back in the late 90’s / early 00’s I’m sure you know the kind of thing I’m talking about.

Damn I miss that stuff. 3 hours drinking tea and chatting to some guy you’ve just meet about the most incredible things imaginable – what’s not to love.

Grinner – let me know if there is ever a demand for anything from Oz – I’m certain I could get some fresh material.

    Thanks

Edit it so that you only use one source (either ITN or the Beeb)

Then give them a call and beg.

Posted rates are not the only rates they charge – but as far as I am aware you can’t use it without thier permission in some form.

June 25, 2009 at 3:28 am in reply to: storyboard

I think it’s a case of keeping it “honest” – and coming from reading 80’s British comic books, I like to see a story board that actually tells the story.

Don’t care if we use stick men/stills/or animatics to show what’s going to happen, the only question is “can they tell what the finished product be like?” and then a follow up of “is it possible to make sane changes on the basis of this story board?” (I like to aim for at least the chance of sane changes…..)

If the answer to those 2 is yes – then it’s good enough to use, +/- a level of presentation quality to pass muster for the project with the client.

    Thanks

June 12, 2009 at 1:27 am in reply to: Captioning anyone?

I’ve just been through a little headache with captioning on a Govt. project – your dumb captioning is not nearly as dumb as you portray.

I outsource captioning (in Australia, so company contact is a little redundant – but they would probably do the work if you wanted) – my suggestion is to use a captioning company that can happily provide you dumb and smart captions – one set for DVD & broadcast, the other for use in your NLE of choice (format fun and games ensue).

The reason I suggest going for the double set is to accommodate Govt. delivery changes, here at least, they tend to change their mind quite often. Starts off just on DVD and broadcast, then web, perhaps a VHS (ouch) and last but not least a 10 second clip for use in a power point. All captioned and un-captioned please, if that’s not too much bother?

If you do both formats at the outset you are in good shape to handle any delivery that might crop up in the later stages. Some captioning companies act as if you are insane for wanting a version that works straight in FCP or whatever, but there are those that can handle it with east and it’s a simple purpose to reversion the output file for your use.

    Thanks

If you decide to go Freelance, before you go an tell him:-

    Work out your day rate.

Work out your week rate (if you want to encourage block bookings)

    Work out your payment details.

And let them know what they are, and that you would love to carry on working with them as much as they want to book you.
